Voyageurs Cup or Playoffs, 2013 Edition

MLS Playoffs or MLS Supporter's Shield are preferable. Winning the V'Cup is massive and I would jump up and down, but in reality it's a 4 game tournament against 2 teams. Playing CCL is exciting and all as well - gets the club a bit of extra cash (maybe?) - but no one in NA cares about the CCL ... not really. Unless you are in a QF at a major football/baseball stadium ;)

I want the Whitecaps to win every trophy. But if I had to pick it'd be an MLS trophy I want them to win. Until one day when the MLS raises salary cap and a team can actually dream about winning the CCL and playing in the CWC semi-final.

For fans of the existing teams, I imagine most answers would depend on past performance. Winning the V-Cup for TFC fans is old hat, but making the playoffs is the holy grail. On the other hand, in a future hypothetical world where Toronto is a playoff regular, an actual trophy is probably preferable to a quick playoff exit.

I think it depends on the club...

Vancouver: V-Cup (since they made play-offs last year but have not won the V-Cup in a long time and have never played in CCL)

Toronto: Play-offs (since they have won V-cup 4 times in a row and have never qualified for play-offs)

Montreal: Play-offs (since they narrowly missed out on play-offs last year, and have had recent (kinda) continental success)

I think that pretty much sums it up.

I love the CONCACAF Champions league concept and say that any way in is a good way in. TFC getting to the semifinals as an MLS team that didn't make the playoffs was nothing short of huge upset after huge upset, last season, though. I'd say making the playoffs is a better gauge of whether you are actually a really solid club, at THIS point, but the V-Cup is expanding. Will include Ottawa soon, and maybe more by 2020. It's prestige can only grow, and therefore it's desirability.

Right now, though, since playoffs is the better gauge, I'll say playoffs.

V-Cup would be a 100% more interesting if the CSA changed the format BACK to a Group one. Since even when Ottawa joins in the will play FC Edmonton for the lone 4th seed. And then play seed 1 just like now. Slightly more entertaining. While we all know a group of 5teams(3MLS & 2NASL) would mean 8extra games. And 100000000% more Adrenaline. Many players would get the chance to shine and get minutes in that case as the coaches would have to juggle around with the squads as which is more important League or V-Cup. Games could be played over 4wednesdays then maybe 1week break and again 4wednesdays. NASL teams would ease in into the league by starting in he V-Cup.

I've been thinking about this.

To keep the games low, you could have a 5-team round robin where you only play each team once. Each team plays 4 games, 2 home, 2 away.

Until one of the MLS teams gets both of their home games against the other MLS teams and there's a poopy storm.

Oh I agree.

You also run the risk of teams having nothing to play for on the last matchday facing teams needing to win by a lot to advance (ie 2009 V's Cup).

On the flipside teams would be able to sell tickets for sure. Right now teams have to give a refund to season ticket holders if they are knocked out of the 1st round.

And of course, if/when more NASL teams join the ranks it is difficult to keep it a round robin.

No format is perfect, but at least a round robin would mean a tournament of meaningful length where all teams have a fair chance, as opposed to the CSA's mooted proposals to penalize the NASL teams for not being part of the MLS marketing machine.

I still don't see too many issues. Just organize a Round Robin tournament like the UEFA Cup was. Teams will be awarded home and away matches depending on their ranking the preceeding season(coefficient). A great way to entice teams not to throw away games would be prizes being awarded.

Make it Public:

Win 25k

Tie 10k

First Place 100k

Second Place 60k

Third Place 40k

Fourth Place 30k

Fifth Place 20k

Of course I realize those are peanuts in the "football" world but still if the money goes towards young players making minimum salary.....and we would need someone willing to fork out the money to pay for it All.
