Recommended Posts

A 23 year old CB, Opare signed with the LA Galaxy early in the 2013 season after being picked in the second round of the MLS draft from the University of Michiagan

A native of Ghana, Opare also lived in South Africa and the United States before his family settled in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He debuted for the Wolverines in 2009 when he was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He set career-highs for games played and games started as a sophomore in 2010, helping lead Michigan to the College Cup Semifinals for the first time in school history.

Opare is eligible for several national teams.

Interesting. Tommy Meyer is no slouch either he slotted into CB during the CCL last season did he not?

He has his work cut out for him, but sadly his signing automatically puts him on the CMNT radar.

....I can't wait for the day when signing a contract is not enough for national team consideration.

I don't know, are we exaggerating a little bit. I mean, don't get me wrong, we should cap him whenever we get a chance, and he accepts. But, even if we don't count McKenna, there is still: Edgar, Jakovic, Hainault ahead of Opare. Then, is Opare (at this moment) clearly ahead of Straith or Nana? Not sure.

I'm not sure about Straith, but certainly not ahead of Nana. If Doneil Henry can stop his mind racing so much, he's got the athletic attributes to be ahead of Opare as well, he just has NOT been playing well the last year. I'm not sure...I think I'd actually rate Hamilton and Roberts for FCEdmonton as on the same level as Opare or higher, as well, at this very moment.

good thing about Opare making LA roster is that Arena is not in the habit of signing junk. Arena is probably best judge of talent in MLS right now and to have him offer you a contract is a major endorsement that you do not suck

If that Buzzfeed article is accurate, he isn't eligible for Canada.

It says he moved to Newark at 11 and three years later (age 14) moved to Canada before going to College in USA(age 18?).

If the reason for his supposed eligibility is residency then he's out of luck, see (d) :

Any Player who ... [assumes] a new nationality and who has not played international football [in a match ... in an official competition of any category or any type of football for one Association] shall be eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfills one of the following conditions:

(a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;

(b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;

(c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;

(d) He has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant Association.

LA supporters speak well of Opare, but he's had 12 games in 2013 and 2014 seasons. DC has a CB issue with Jeff Parke having migraine problems and all other CBs are either rookies or not very good. But then again, Opare exactly haven't proven himself either.
