Most Annoying Broadcasters

Craig Macewan.

The dribble that comes out of this guys mouth just destroys the attmosphere of the match. He just does not shut the F*** up. Sportsnet send this guy back to hockey. He sucks.

The word you are looking for, I think, is "drivel". I agree he is not great with soccer, but he and his partner have noticeably improved from the beginning of last season.

One thing those Sportsnet broadcasts could definitely do without is the coach interview during live action. I think Rennie would have killed the poor sideline reporter had Columbus scored on the corner while they were talking.

Maybe we could promote this as a way for the stations to save money.

No announcers. No color commentary.

Just a few mics, and save lots of money.

Happy fans everywhere.

Does anybody remember the media strike last decade when a few weeks of CFL broadcasts were done without announcers? 'Twas fantastic.

Still have producers picking ****e camera angles. During the TFC match they were showing cut-aways of the coaches and the bench while the ball was in play. I actually DO NOT MIND watching a keeper place the ball on the grass and walk back to take a kick, it is fine, my viewing experience is not ruined. It is ruined, however, by the stupid producer using cameras that are not actually focused on the field. Once that is done, we can talk about the fairly bad selection of upclose to wide perspective.

On the same point, the camera guys on the goal line, for replays are really slow/have no idea how to anticipate the play. I love watching slow motion replays where the actual incident is near or at the edge of the camera angle. Beauty.

I would pay to have the field & crowd set up well with mics. And no one talking.

I would pay. I hate them all.

This. I love it when the commentary goes mute due to technical difficulties. You get a better sense of the game without commentators. I especially liked it when those two English guys stopped talking during Man City/Dortmund 1 late last year. However, Dobson and Forrest thought it would be best if they started taking over...

We could have a long debate about this one, but Nigel Reid drives me absolutely nuts.

Between him and Iarusci I had to stop listening to the soccer show on the fan. The way they'd run the program at times was embarrassing, it was like they put zero preparation into what they were doing. They had Kevin Payne on the program recently, but you would have been hard pressed to notice. Barely asked one reasonable question in the time he was there, Bob and Nigel spent most of the time talking about themselves as opposed to getting anything out of their guest. They just repeat the same cliches over and over and over.

They are terribly uninformative. Not sure how they still manage to stay on the air, there are plenty of young hungry guys out there who have podcast which are superior in quality to what they do.

Always preferred one guy in the both, no colour commentation. I prefer the colour commentary to be at half time and post game, when that person has had some time to be thoughtful about particular plays.

And, as has been mentioned by others here, too many of these guys feel like they are getting paid by the word. Often, less is more.

I have been in the habit of watching most matches with the mute on for the last couple of years and that's been fine.

I don't know man. I was watching the Whitecaps, I think it was Sportsnet, and I got really annoyed when the announcer said "he put a little too much wood on that one."

Seriously, ask my wife, I was annoyed with their announcing the whole game. It's kinda funny this thread is here, because I agree, although I don't know their names, I'm sure it was McEwan from the rest of the reactions.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!

I'm also very annoyed by the constant banter between the two commentators no matter who they are. During developing play might I add. The bias is also extremely annoying. I watch a lot of MLS live and I get a lot of us feeds with us commentators who get annoying quick so I have to mute the game just to maintain my sanity.

This is what I would like to see:

- only one play-by-play commentator. No color commentator.

- no sideline interviews during play.

- continually calling the play-by-play on the field as it develops.

- more excitement in the voice ala Mexican commentators

- no bias between home and away teams.

I agree except about the excitement in the voice. I think the sportsnet guys trying to be too excited about not much is actually one of their most annoying traits. And haven't you ever heard a Canadian announcer say "GOOOOOOOOLLLLL!!!" ? It makes you want to rip your ears off.

Surprised no one has mentioned the terrible camera work/production decision on the KC goal against TFC. The commentators were talking about the card to Califf and the camera they were using was not following the play and missed the goal. I didn't even realize they had started play again and the next thing they were saying that KC had scored and we had to be content to watch the goal on replay. As a viewer it almost seemed like something unfair or untoward had happened because one did not have the impression that the goal occurred during play.

When I lived in Japan, I used to watch Serie A on Sky Sports occasionally. Since I don't speak Italian, and they didn't have an Japanese commentators for the live feed, I could select the SAP (Secondary Audio Program) and it would be no commentary, but all of the stadium noise. It's probably the best TV viewing experience I have ever had.

In watching the highlights of the 'Caps first two games, I am absolutely dumbfounded that neither Sportsnet nor TSN have figured out that they need a high camera angle that shoots perpendicular to the field of play. It's the camera angle that they must immediately show the replay from whenever there's a contentious offside call. This angle would have told us immediately if Hurtado was actually offside for what should have been Vancouver's third goal on Saturday.

Yes the MLS screw up of the week and fire the ass off the director.

TFC's play by play guy on GolTV (Dan Dunleavy??) does this. Makes me want to punch my TV.

I revise my earlier statement.

I would pay for access to a big red button that activates electrodes attached to their genitals. So whenever they say something stupid.....

But the combined electronic surge from across the country would instantly neuter them ... okay, maybe that's not a downside.

The thing that gets me the most are the so called soccer experts here in Canada that are in the media that are not up to date on the soccer happenings here in Canada and North America. The biggest culprits for me are guys like Nigel Reed, Iarusci, Forrest and I may be missing a few, these guys are just not as knowledgeble as they should be when it comes to the MLS, Canadian national soccer team, Canadian players in the MLS and abroad, and just soccer in general here in North America. In this day and age with information being so accessible with the internet there is no excuse for guys working in the Canadian soccer media not knowing about soccer happenings, about players, team news and so on. Listening to some of these guys it takes just a few seconds of listening to them to figure out they don't do their homework properly, it's just not acceptable in this day and age. Guys in the media that know their stuff are guys like Devos, the older Scottish guy from Fox soccer based in Winnipeg, also the two guys from the Score are guys that know their stuff and do their homework.

They're not soccer guys, and more anchors than sportscasters, but I can't hold it in: Onrait and O'Toole. Not funny. Not original. Distracting. Smug. Self-important. Just really really lame. I'm sure they're not in real life...and I absolutely hate calling people this...and it pains me to do so...but on-air they just strike me as complete losers.

I abhor the current standard of sportsbroadcasting with its newfound focus on on-air personalities. Planning a sports anchor crew? Gotta check all the boxes: the jock, the snarky nerd, the goofy nerd, the straightman, the old hack, the pretty smart girl, the pretty ditsy girl, etc. Throw in an ex-pro and you're good. Can't watch Sportscentre any longer.

The attraction is the sport, not the presenter. I blame the internet and fantasy sports (of which I am a participant.) Previous generations who watched sports news were more jockish and really just wanted to see the action and get the rest out of the way.

That's why you had relatively boring guys like Suneil Joshi or Gerry Dobson or Vic or Gino Reda, etc. Sure you had your Tatti/Hebscher combo out here in Toronto but by and large they were pretty tame. I'm not saying these guys were necessarily great (though I did like the latter combo) but at least they were relatively inoffensive and out of the way.

But now, fantasy sports has brought the non-jocks back into the fold. Nerds and sports have made up and are back together thanks to Daniel Okrent, Bill James and Yahoo.com. They fancy themselves as a bit more intellectual. They want more in a show than just the plays - they can get that online - so now we have the show being the attraction, and not the content it is reporting on. And it's harder to make the show's attraction to be depth and analysis than it is the people presenting it and so now we have to put up with crap like Onrait and O'Toole. Ugh.

Can't stand PJ Stock either. He adds absolutely nothing. Though at least he seems like he's being himself.

Okay, relatively-unrelated rant over. :) Feel free to move or delete mods.
