Former, current TFC players make opprobrious comments about Earl Cochrane

Recommended Posts

The headline makes me laugh. Its only opprobrius if it isn't true.

One thing I find interesting is the number of non TFC players who decided to add to the comments (Klukowski, Porter, etc.)

Nice detective work by Rollins there. Turning 4-month old comments into a story.

I'm not going to hate on the players for this like some people are. We often complain that athletes are boring and only spout off cliches when interviewed. I'm not going to attack them for what appears to be their honest feelings about Cochrane. Its an interesting look into the reputation Cochrane (and TFC) have among players.

I wish the club would rid itself of Cochrane.

While this inevitably looks bad on Cochrane and TFC, it looks pretty bad on the players making the comments too.

I wonder if there will be any moves to discipline the current TFC members involved?

I believe the only current player involded is Doniel Henry.

Edit: just quickly scrolling the comments it appears his only comment is 'wow'.

I didn't know about it, did you?

Why not post it?

Maybe you should try doing some of this **** for free before bitching at the people who do.

I'm not bitching, just making a joke. Why so defensive?

I'm happy he posted it because it gives us an insight into the reputation of Cochrane and the club. I just disagree with the headline.

Besides, if you don't want your work criticized, don't post it for all the world to see.

I know it might be hard to believe, but I actually appreciate the work Rollins does. I just don't always agree with this viewpoint.

Is anyone making them "do this **** for free"? Sorry but it is a pet peeve of mine for people who voluntary do something for free then complain about doing it for free. No one if forcing anyone and if they don't enjoy it, maybe it's time to move on.

I'm not really complaining about what you said. More other stuff just adding up, so my apologies for that.

It's the continuous avalanche of **** which ultimately turns a lot of people away which is frustrating because we want to grow all of this. The soccer stuff that is.

It's not free, and there is a goal. I have put at least $2000 into that site over the last couple of years.

The goal is to grow the game, and that is why they do it. That is why we are doing all of this.

I don't think there is a lot of complaining going on. I am the one bitching about it on their behalf, not them. I am just getting kind of sick of it. You don't see the vitriol that we delete on these sites. It's getting really boring to deal with.

You see it in everything. Making banners, organizing parties. It's same people and **** that do nothing and complain. It's not a new problem.

The other way to rewrite your last sentence is if people are doing something and getting continuously nothing but bull**** from a small group of people, maybe those people should just **** off. (that is not directed at you, by the way. I am talking about the trolls)

Agreed. Doing something "for free" doesn't exactly give you free reign.

No, no one is making me do anything. I could stop writing for CSN right now, if I wanted to. And for sure, anyone putting their thoughts or opinions into the public sphere is opening themselves up to feedback, both positive and negative. But I keep doing it for the same reason I started doing it years ago, the same reason Jamie has mentioned: Because the cause of growing the game of soccer in this country is something I believe in, and am willing to invest my time and money into. And when I say money, I mean hundreds if not thousands of dollars; and when I say time, oh man, I don't even want to contemplate the number of hours.

I don't say this to attempt to make a martyr of myself or anyone else. But I presume you've accumulated hundreds of posts on the Voyageurs message board because you also care about this cause. So while it's understandable that the "self-pitying volunteer" is a pet peeve of yours, it's a little dispiriting that you'd be as flippant about the work and intentions as those who are in the same boat as you on a subject of common interest.

I mean, I'm not asking for gratitude or a prize; but something other than "if you're not enjoying it, then move on" from a fellow Voyageur would be kinda nice.

Oh, and so that this isn't a total threadjack... yes, as I said above, anyone putting their thoughts and opinions into the public sphere (which includes some forms of social media) opens themselves up to both positive and negative feedback, and that includes soccer players commenting on a current or former employer.

That is not what I am suggesting or complaining about. Narduch's comment was fine, that was a mistake on my part. People should criticize things.

It's the continuous baiting and trolling that has people I meet say to me they never come to this site or post on CSN because of it.

That is disappointing. Especially when it's such a small number of people doing it. For free is perhaps the wrong term to use. That comes from some time ago when people were suggesting there was lots of money being made and used it as excuse to act like pricks. There isn't.

I'm hardly one with the right be give someone advice, but maybe Rollins and his defenders need to do a little self evaluation. Why does he always get attacked? There has to be a reason. The CSN articles on Canada, Montreal or Vancouver don't seem to devolve the way Rollins' pieces do.

People aren't just picking on him for the sake of it. He's developed a reputation and because of that his critics are always quick to respond.

Part of me thinks he likes it! :) Maybe he has his own S&M secret room someplace.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

LOL. Sometimes I think it might even be good for the site. After less than 24 hours the piece on Cochrane is the most commented recent article on the site.

I'm think its safe to assume Rollins gets the most hits on CSN.

Agreed, Duane definitely has a number of people who seem to be dedicated to getting him to fly off the handle and comment for the sole purpose disparaging his work. Now that being said, I quite frequently take issue with what he writes these days. To me, it often comes across as poorly thought out and slanted. It's annoyed me to the point where I read CSN far less than I used to.

In many ways the guy is his own worst enemy when it comes to the people trolling the site. Take this most recent piece for example. I don't have any issue with him publishing that info. But how about not running a headline that leaves the reader with the impression that he's passing judgement on the players? After all, that was released in the format of a news piece. If he wanted to write his opinion or give his take on it, then I'd have no problem. But that line between news / opinion often get blurred more often than it should. The other major criticism I'd have of that piece is it didn't give any background info on Earl Cochrane, his reputation, or previous things that went around the rumor mill. That would have given some badly needed context to the players comments and perhaps would have raised the natural question of: what did Earl Cochrane do to catch their ire?

I was hoping someone would explain this? Other than helping to give JDG $5m, I don't know.

It's really funny when you think about it that way. I can't think of too many jobs where I would make that much money I wouldn't be happy about regardless of the situation lest it involved ritual genital mutilation. That might remove the perma smile from my face.

I hope the saga of bull**** whatever it was behind the scenes at TFC is over.

You actually don't know what opprobrius means. Clearly, you don't. It's a word used to describe the act of expressing scorn, disgrace, or contempt towards someone or some thing.

You can make an opprobrious statement without it being defamatory. That's what your describing -- defamation, of which truthfulness is the ultimate defence against.

For God's sake LOOK THE WORD UP. It was picked SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE IT'S NEUTRAL.

Your response is uproarious.
