MLS #20 might not be NYC2

Recommended Posts

I thought most people assumed that NASL was just a warm-up for Cosmos. Even if NY isn't getting the 20th spot, they will get spot 21, or 22, or 23, or 24 (please stop expansion at 24!!!) - and yes, I would prefer the league stop at 20, but that won't be the case.

From the Cosmos perspective the NASL has a lot going for it. No salary cap, fewer roster restrictions in general, less central control, etc. If the Cosmos can make the same money in the NASL they'll be in a good situation, and the NASL has ambitions. Hell, they were tweeting just this weekend about wanting their own CONCACAF Champions League spot...

.... at the point at which that becomes a serious headache for CONCACAF, then we may well see a World Series Style game in North American soccer.

I was going to watch the second half of the Caps TFC game at the weekend, Switch on but switched it off as the first thing that came on the screen was the Don refering to NASL as "Minor league".

Now, I know its minor league, but this is soccer and the NASL is officially North America's second division. He could have easily refered to it as second Division, but refered to use dismissive terminology. If he wanted to be technically correct the MLS just created a minor league of its own with turn USL-pro outfits into farm teams.

Thanks, but no thanks Don.

I caught that too, thought it was quite classless and a heavy cut at the NASL. I think MLS is going to take a hard stance against the NASL as things will become more interesting if/when the Canadian D3 framework comes to light.
