coppercanuck
Shouldn't this be a good measuring stick for the "gap" between top amateur seniors and young professionals? These are the games I'd like to see more often.
BringBackTheBlizzard
From what I remember London Portuguese once beat the Toronto Lynx's A League roster in a game like this, back when they were the top team in the London area. Not sure what scorelines prove though in exhibition games like this because it is usually a time for the higher status team to experiment, while the lower status team tends to be a lot more gung ho about going for a result. Ottawa St. Anthony beat the Lynx back when they were Open Cup champs too, didn't they?
BringBackTheBlizzard
Yes, they did. That was a competitive game so a different sort of scenario. From what I remember the Ottawa team was made up of a lot of former players from the Ottawa Wizards CPSL side, who had operated for a few seasons on a fully pro sort of basis before being kicked out of the league, so it was unusually strong for an amateur side. Other results in the Open Cup did show that the gap between top amateur, C[P]SL semi-pro and the Lynx wasn't that great, however.

jordan
Most of those guys were local players prior to Ottawa Wizards. 5 out of the starting 11 never player for the Wizards and either did 5 out of 6 on the bench. Was a good team, i remember going to this game. That year in the OCSL i think Royals and St Anthony were just plowing teams.
