nolando
“Secrets can cause so much internal damage,” Rogers writes in the roughly 400-word post. “People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently. “I always thought I could hide this secret,” he adds. “Football was my escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could have ever imagined. … I will always be thankful for my career. I will remember Beijing, the MLS Cup, and most of all my teammates. I will never forget the friends I have made a long the way and the friends that supported me once they knew my secret.” http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/02/15/former-crew-mf-rogers-says-hes-gay-leaving-soccer
youllneverwalkalone
Good luck to him. I guess I wonder if he had come back to MLS, if he couldn't have continued his career? I guess he didn't feel like dealing with the scrutiny.

BringBackTheBlizzard
Sounds like it's maybe the religious angle he is having a tough time dealing with. If Justin Fashanu could play for Airdrie (a town in Scotland that could never be mistaken for a hippie commune when it comes to liberal social attitudes) twenty years ago I don't think it would be mission impossible for him to continue his career at some point. alberta white
Sadly Justin's issues ran deep within the family. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2089982/John-Fashanu-disapproved-disowned-brother-Justins-gay-lifestyle.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/9149569/John-Fashanu-my-brother-Justin-wasnt-gay.html Acceptence of oneself can be hard enough but it must be so much harder if those you love the most find it impossible to support you.
