Jonathan De Guzman: Will never play for Canada

Louis van Gaal, manager of the Netherlands, recently released his provisional roster for a friendly match against Italy for the 6th of February. To our dismay Jonathan De Guzman was included. I'd expect this occurrence to repeat itself over their upcoming WCQ games. In that event it will be official: Jonathan De Guzman will never play for Canada.

Voyageurs circle of life.

1) Person comes to the men's national team forum to post about Jonathan de Guzman.

2) Person sees there is no post on the men's national team forum about Jonathan de Guzman.

3) Person posts about Jonathan de Guzman.

4) Voyageurs rant about post.

5) Admin moves post to World Football or deletes it; either way, nobody will ever see it again.

Guys I have a bad feeling Owen H. will pick England.

and I have a sneaky suspicion that some other wankers will pick USA and Portugal ....

Maybe we should just have one thread for "the ones that got away" and then we could fill it will all the splitters and only have one thread to ignore.

I scrolled through the forum quickly, and it didn't look as though anyone had a made the comment. I just assumed nobody gave a **** about Dutch soccer. Oh well, you live and you learn.

And the good old Voyageurs welcome mat is rolled out once again. Well done, everyone.

Jesus Christ, I think you'll find there are plenty of sarcastic posts about how welcoming we are already. If you aren't going to look them up, why don't you go back to your precious Toronto BMO Field hate Canada wearing TFC kit to national team games they should call up Chris Pozniak?

One thing that I'm curious about is, why did Julian de Guzman kept pushing for Jono to play for Canada, when he probably knew that Jono was never going to suit up for Canada? Well, the chances were very slim.

I think the reason Julian kept pushing him to play for us was he probably got the same vague answers from him that everyone else did which led him to believe he might be convinced to play for us. And probably it was a dream for Julian to play with his brother on the national team though obviously it was not a dream for Jonathan. I actually asked Jonathan if he would play for Canada when he was around 16 or 17 and his answer would have made most veteran politician proud for being non-committal and keeping his options open while not actually saying anything. It was astounding (impressive in a way but depressing in other ways) to hear a response so shrewd and calculated from someone that young. Since that conversation I never really thought he would play for us but I also knew that if the situation changed and it was in his best interests to do so he would. And for that to happen Holland would have to not be interested in him and Canada would have to have a decent shot at qualifying for the World Cup, in other words be in the Hex. A year ago that seemed a real possibility thus the reports of renewed interest on his part.
