U.S. women's program hires more full time coaches

U.S. Soccer named its first full-time U-17 women's national team coach with the hiring of UCLA head coach B.J. Snow. It also hired April Kater to the full-time position of head development coach and will soon name a third full-time coach for youth women’s national team program. Here's what Sunil Gulati, Jill Ellis and Tom Sermanni had to say about the moves ...

On the two new full-time hires for the U.S. Youth Women’s National Team Staff:

“We are dedicated to the continuing growth of our U.S. women’s national teams and women’s soccer at all levels. The hiring of two more full-time coaches for our youth women’s national team, with one more to come, and U.S. Soccer’s involvement in the new National Women’s Soccer League, makes 2013 an important year in the evolution of the women’s game in the United States. We are looking forward to B.J. and April helping to continue the tradition of excellence we’ve established with our youth women’s teams.”

On the hiring of B.J. Snow:

“B.J. is an excellent tactician and teacher and a great fit to be the first full-time coach for one of our youth World Cup teams. It’s such an important position because the U-17 cycle is the first time our players get to experience CONCACAF qualifying and a World Cup and he will help lay a tremendous foundation for players that we hope will rise through our national team programs. He’s analytical and passionate and has a tremendous work ethic.”

On the hiring of April Kater:

“April is going to be a fantastic addition to our staff, she has been working in our Training Centers and scouting network for the past two years and has shown a passion for youth development. Her experience at every level and her tremendous communications skills make her a perfect fit for our youth national teams program.”

“Having quality people and coaches involved in running our youth national teams is vitally important for the overall success of the program. There is such a large pool of players in the United States that it takes a hard-working and cohesive team to create a network to make sure we are identifying and given chances to all the deserving players around the country. The value of creating positive, competitive environments with all our youth national teams can be clearly seen by the fact that we called in several players from our last U-20 World Cup Team and even our last U-17 World Cup team for our next national team training camp.”

You knew there was going to be ramifications when we eliminated the Americans from the World Cup during CONCACAF playdowns two years ago.

This will elevate the Americans at the U17 level. We made some limited youth upgrades this year that looked positive but our day's of overachieving are now on pretty thin ice. Full-time commitment is a pretty heavy stick.

Seems UCLA is a breeding ground for national women's coaches. Snow's wife is also Lindsay Tarpley, the Canada killer.

Breeding ground for success in NCAA with NT players, and having an NT player for a wife are all things that stand you in good stead.

Being an assistant coach to the woman who does the hiring never hurts either.
