Asian champions Japan will take on Canada in preparation for their FIFA World Cup™ qualifier against Jordan in March.

The game against Canada will take place in the Qatari capital Doha on 22 March, four days before the Samurai Blue take on Jordan, needing only one win to guarantee their berth at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Denmark > USA > Japan. 23 > 28 > 22 In the world

Anyone else feel like our opposition for friendlies this winter is more than a little improved over previous years?

yes this is great. however, we already know the first two will feature young canadian teams. if the third one does (which i hope it does) i don't really expect a good result (just like the jan friendlies).

what it gives us is a sense as to where we need to be and which positions we need to look for talent to improve. all three of these teams will be wcq ready and could possibly assume that they will apply their "a" game.

i wonder if we could see the likes of some of our young folks like stillo, aird, carreiro, petrasso, piette, deckers, gasparotto, aleman, lao, attakora, haber, owusu-ansah???

So when we are building for a World Cup Qualifying campaign in which we had a decent chance no one wants to play us, but once we're out we get three teams who will all expect to be in the World Cup next summer??? Strange.

Perhaps this is because they are all building toward things.

Liking the multiple friendlies and much less concerned with the results vs. what this might do for the youth movement and their development. Perhaps a few will get looks from clubs and they could find their club situation improving as a result as well.

That's great news!!! Since we are there then can expect to hava 1 more game on 26 of March.

looks like many of the european teams have games on the 25th of march. however, form what i could find, it appears that many of the african teams will play on the 21st. i wonder if it would be possible to play a team like ghana, algeria or cote 'd'ivoire in a neutral site somewhere over that way on the 25/26th?... all of those teams are ranked form 14-30.

It's great and all... but if we aren't playing in Central America and the Carribean, it's frankly a waste of time.

Learn to play there, or close the program.

You think?! You will never, ever, ever reproduce the environment of San Pedro Sula during a must-win World Cup qualifier in a friendly, any more than you'll get the biggest, most bad-ass home support at BMO Field for a home friendly against East Bum****istan. There's no magic elixir about playing in Central America which makes them magically superior to everyone in the world; they're just better soccer teams than Canada, therefore they tend to beat us. The most important thing is to play, and improve against, quality opposition, not to fart around.

Sure, play good teams. But we need players to play down there more, at all ages.

We often get decent frienly results all over the place. It's not helping us.

I am (probably naively) hoping that this is the case ... friendlies on most international dates against quality opposition This is one thing that people have been calling for for a long time. Let's hope this is an indication of the CSA starting to turn the corner.

I respectfully disagree.

We DO need to set up more friendlies in Central America (and to a lesser extent the Carribean) but this friendly shouldn't be a waste of time. It's a great opponent. Playing in CONCACAF countries will be more important after July 2013. We were never going to play in Central America in January.

We will play there some other time. The year is still young.

Well done CSA. This is not the time to complain about them but rather to praise their continued efforts.

EDIT: Since it's in Qatar and it's a friendly, perhaps beINsports will have the broadcast rights and the game won't be shown in Canada.

I am totally baffled by both the timing and the quality of these opponents. Didn't we need tough matches against first rate opponents during WCQ, with our full squad and fulltime coach, before key matches, to prepare for Honduras or Panama away? Now we will have a skeleton squad like we had vs. Venezuela, by the sounds of things, with a temporary coaching staff that is evaluating players for the future, and all of a sudden we have three top opponents in a row, just when we need them the least. Even with a European-based squad for this, the Japan match, won't mean much, as we have so few players at a decent level anywhere anymore, Europe included. And presumably the MLS guys wouldn't be there.

And I tend to agree with socceronly for the most part. While it's true that we can't simulate a WCQ away, we could certainly play the odd friendly in the heat away to Costa Rica or Guatemala or El Salvador, at least 2 or 3 times a year, to remind our players and staff what the real obstacles have always been to us qualifying. Winter in the Baltics or in Doha vs Japan in an empty stadium really serves very little point, imo.

And this is coming from a guy whose second home is Japan and whose wife is Japanese and who will be able to watch with his son as his son's two nations compete together for the first time in his life, And I still think it makes very little sense.

Your right, the timing is odd. I would guess what we are seeing is a CSA that learned their lesson the hard way (8-1 loss). At least it looks like they won't be cheaping out on friendlies anymore...

You have to wonder if Denmark, Japan and the USA's fans are thinking to themselves "I am totally baffled by the quality of this opponent. Don't we need tough matches against first rate opponents during WCQ? Why are playing a Canadian squad with only their second string guys?"
