Who Will be the Interim?

Tony Fonseca, thats easy.

Not so, according to Montagliani.

Montagliani said newly appointed technical director Tony Fonseca, whose resume includes both Olympic coach and senior assistant coach, will not serve as interim coach.

"He's got a massive job on his hands ... He's already started that in earnest," Montagliani said of Fonseca's role as technical director.

I mentioned in other threads that I would be OK with Fonseca being an interim coach as long as it doesn't evolve into a Stephen Hart scenario where it becomes full time because he gets the odd good result and the players like him! I think Daso will be fine running the team briefly and as has been mentioned there should be some youngsters involved for him to look at!

I think it would be pretty irresponsible to put Dasovic on double duty so soon before qualifiers... and that team actually has a good shot at doing damage. But really looking at the options I don't see too many others.

Marc Bircham!

I have to say no to Marc Bircham, but I do think you raise a great point about Dasovic! Would that be a distraction for him? Would that time be better served scouting other U-20 teams?

If so maybe we go with Colin Miller, he was Interim before back in 2003. Was the same year I played in the U-18 national club competition. He was also coach of Abbottsford (BC team) and I remember he showed up the day before we played his team (I believe he was arriving from his interim duty against Finland). At any rate I was in awe that I was playing against a team coached by a man who just finished coaching the CMNT lol.

Since we do play Denmark B team +USA, we can use some of U20 players and Dasovic will be best opition for interim coach.

The Bircham suggestion was a joke haha sorry. Miller would be a good call but he's coach of FC Edmonton now so he won't be available.

John Limniatis is an idea as someone who has MNT playing and pro coaching experience, so for 2 games we could do worse.

No clue...

CSA Prez VM has stated that they will likely fill it internally or with someone familiar to the national team (and player pool), however, Fonseca is not going to fill it and Dasovic appears occupied with the U20s (who have a camp soon after).

Add to that the fact that Collin Miller is newly employed at FC Edmonton, and that pretty much nixes half of the names mentioned here.

Moreover, my hope is that they don't give it to someone who's actually under consideration to take the job permanently, as I think that would biased the results of their hiring process. (We all saw how that worked out last time)

I think with all of that in mind we're critically short on quality/experience coaches. Anyone currently in the youth set up (other than ND) who might get a sniff? Thoughts?...

oh okay that makes sense, sarcasm can be hard to detect on the net, but in hindsight the explination mark should have been a giveaway lol

John Limniatis would be a decent choice for sure, but I don't recall him ever coaching a national team at any level, so I don't think it will be him.

Perhaps it would be Sean Flemming? He doesn't have any pro experience from what I recall, but hey that never stopped the CSA before...

It seems a little strange that the man who will pick our squad in the next 10 days or so still hasn't been announced.

Montagliani said that Fonseca is out of the picture, but I think that he is going to be our coach.

Bring Brennan in. Call up De Ro. The two of them can call the shots like they were behind the scenes in the dying days of the Mitchell Era. After all, players know best!
Amen and amen.

The only way I think this will work with our current crop of loser players (we don't have any other choice than them right now) is to go with a coach who has achieved more (club or country) than the players have. Then you get begrudging respect and they've got no excuses. Oops sorry, forgot hotel, airplane, artificial turf excuses.

There is always someone available for the price we can afford. All people (coaches) are at different stages of their lives. You could get a high ranking assistant who's looking to break out (ie Holger). You could get a high profile guy who has fallen on hard times looking for a jump start. You can work part time deals with more experienced coaches who don't want to devote full time hours.

No matter what the job and pay there is always a quality fit available somewhere. You just can't assume nobody good will want the job, it doesn't work that way. One of my 50 previous careers was HR recruiting. If you put it out there and do some due diligence you can get somebody good.

One of the problems though is that we seem to lack connections on the international scene. Who on the Canadian soccer scene could have their calls answered by decent prospective candidates?

Personally, I like Bruce Arena. He knows the region, been successful on the international stage and is one cocky bugger. He'd give the players the ol Orval Tessier heart transplant or away you go.
