Beckham leaving Galaxy for real this time

Yeah, his time in the MLS was a lot more successful and longer than I think anyone could of hoped for.

Los Angeles Galaxy

MLS Cup (1): 2011

MLS Supporters' Shield (2): 2010, 2011

MLS Western Conference

Winners (Regular Season) (3): 2009, 2010, 2011

Winners (Playoffs) (3): 2009, 2011, 2012

might be able to add more to that MLS resume soon.

6 years well spent in the MLS for David, not only did he elevate his club he elevated the league and helped create a huge football movement for the MLS that hopefully last a long time.

20 years from now Beckham could be seen as the pivotal player that started transformation of the MLS to a legitimate league to the rest of the footballing world

I agree with most of what you say there other than the Legitimate League thing. That won't really happen until the unbalance schedule and single entity structure is either dispensed with, or fully accepted by the world governing body.

But thats a governance issue. On a game by game basis you can't really knock the MLS on quality and fan Involvement. Better Crowds than Brazil apparently so something must be working.

Also, and probably more significantly:

- Before his arrival values for expansion clubs were at $10Mill, 3 years after his arrival they quadrupled.

- For the first two or three years after his arrival, clubs in places like New York/New Jersey would draw 10-12K per game for typical game during the season but when LAG would come to town, they could sell 66K for one game without lifting a finger. Think of what that means for the bottom line (5 games in one). With that cost structure (salary cap of 2.8 mil) , even the worst drawing clubs would be assured of making money.

- TFC arrived in the same year. If i recall correctly, they had reached season ticket sales of over 9K before the announcement of his arrival (this was in November 2006). Which was pretty darn good. But in a couple of days afterwards they sold 2-3K just off of the announcement.

Yes, Beckham created instant notierity for the MLS. I remember going to see Beckham vs the Whitecaos at BC place. Years before we even were thinking about the MLS. We drew 60k to a soccer friendly containing an USL club. That crowd was pivotal for the MLS coming to Vancouver, and crowds like that for Beecham created a ripple effect for the entire league. People started to show up to games as they realized how fun a soccer game can be as a fan. The MLS has grown exponentially ever since.

I personally was one of those people who watch the World Cup, Euro Cup, Champions League and Gold Cup out side of those my interest wavered. It was the excitement behind Beckham and TFC entering the MLS that really brought my focus over to the MLS.

When he played here in Montreal I was impressed by his effort, he seemed to thrive on the huge crowd and was my pick man of the match.

He's a winner except for those stupid tatoos.

Behind all the Megastar BS there is actually a nice guy. The Ellen Degeneres interview (which if you haven't seen is well worth a visit to Youtube) showed someone prepared to be rather self-deprecating. It is however a peice of media frippery so can still be be manipulated. Wht is more telling is the welcome he got when he returned to Old Trafford. The ovation was less for his exploits on the field but more for the hours he'd spend after games signing the Autograph books without complaint. I'm not sure if the galaxy contract and entourage around him allowed the LA fans to see that side of him.

However to me, more telling than his English redemption, (which occured against Greece in 2001)Its the tales about how he conducts himself away from the game. Forget the stories about girls in nightclubs etc (again its frippery) . It is stories like the guy who rang 606 and told of how fancy black, top of the line Merc pulled up alonside his knacked old VW Jetta stuck on the A13 roundabout off ramp with a flat tyre and a backseat full of grumpy kids. Out Jumps David Beckham who gets his hand dirty helping the bloke change the tyre.

Yeah he doesn't strike one as very educated but he does not seem to be a bad guy and surprisingly does not seem to have the arrogance that so many celebrities as famous and many less famous than him do. As much as the hype surrounding him and the fanboys/girls irritated me when he visited Montreal, when I see how he comports himself and what he says I think a bit that he seems like a guy I could go to a bar and drink a beer with just like any regular guy.

Beks is what he is, he has been smart managing his life, he appears happy, he has had success playing a game he must love, props to him for doing all of that ... even if he does not strike us as a deep thinker.... heck we may soon have a PM who is light weight ... so who is to judge if that cannot work, who was that hollywood president ?

Summary?

The book depicts, among many other things, how shrewd and savvy his handlers and business people are. And, at how much they control the public persona that is David Beckham as well as his environment around him. It also shows how they are not scared to step on any toes in their aims to protect and enhance the David Beckham image and brand while, at the same time shielding his image in the background and out of the way when the **** hits the fan.

I agree, i thought that the book was good read. Full of interesting stories

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1239600/david-beckham-interested-in-new-york-cosmos-role---report?cc=5901

So this ESPN article surfaced of the back of an Irish Newspaper article.

Becks at the Cosmos fits the mantra for "growing the game in america" we heard 5 years ago.

However what got to me was ESPN ability to edit out all refrences to the NASL. Remenicent of the Old Cola War of the 1980's If a sports newscaster can be this manipulative with the facts at hand; and by that I mean Failure to state that the COSMOS are indeed a member of the NASL, then its no wonder the game struggles to promote itself below the Div 1 level.

On a Personal note. Becks at the COSMOS would be a hugh fillet to the likes of FCE. At the very least they would have two game that could be played in the Edmonton Commiebowl, without looking empty on screen.

When the Caps Played the Galaxy there a few years back they Half filled the place, and he didn't even play due to injury.
