Hopefully CSA try to get national team playing every FIFA date in 2013 including home games all over Canada (prefer games being played in major markets against highly FIFA ranked teams). Need to prepare for next world cup qualifying games and try to move up in FIFA rankings.

Reports saying the Germans are coming to America at the end of May/early June for USSF 100th year (hey, why didn't they call us??).

Could we get die Nationalmannschaft here? Or (probably more likely) play them in the States?

That would be sweet....

Back on August 22, 2007, we played a friendly against Iceland in Reykjavic. Part of that friendly deal would see them come to Canada for a game which has not been done yet. Pretty much no timeline on it though.

Ok thanks, what about Jamaica?

Jamaica still owes us a home friendly for the game we played over there at the start of 2010... as does Iceland to be fair but that was five years ago now.
Is this true or simply rumour?

I saw a tweet a couple of weeks back that said they wouldn't be playing on the Nov 14th date, but every date in 2013 would see them play a friendly.

  • 1 month later...

Kudos to the CSA for setting up good friendlies so early on.

So I'll assume we won't play Feb 6th since we have two friendlies in January.

Jamaica seems to have crashed out (didn't bring their best squad?) of the 2012 Caribbean Cup. So Martinique, Haïti, T&T and Cuba(yay, more defections!) will be at the Gold Cup. I could see us playing Haïti or Jamaica in June...

When we played Jamaica in January 2010 there was a deal for a home match in Canada later that year. Early in 2010 we announced that there would be a friendly in Montreal against Honduras and a friendly in Toronto against a team to be named later. Everyone sort of assumed the Toronto game would be against Jamaica, it turned out to be against Peru though so I'm not sure if that deal just fell through or if we will ever get the Jamaica home game. As for Iceland, I'd say that one is gone by now.

I want the CSA to move towards an environment where we can make money on friendlies. Maybe I'm crazy, but that doesn't seem like that much of a pipe dream anymore in my opinion.

Think a good plan would be to package a couple of friendlies together in one city and then that makes sales / marketing efforts more compact. Also works towards building a bigger presence in any single location which would be useful. I think pulling in another concacaf squad or two into the mix would make that reasonable target.

CSA just has to start thinking bigger ... there are ways to make it work IMO.

What about Canada vs France at the big O?

Or Canada vs China at BC place?

If you're thinking that French Canadians have some kind of affinity with France, they don't, any more than anglophone North Americans necessarily have any special affinity for England. Probably even less so in most cases. There is an actually French expat community here but not that large. There's no question a France friendly here would draw, but no more than any other word class country.

I think France would still be a pretty big draw anywhere across Canada, not because of any particular affinity to France, but because they are a "big name" team.

Canada - Italy, Canada - Portugal/Brasil or Canada - Greece at Rogers Centre with real grass installed for the occasion. Potential for sell-out with all those opponents...even Serbia or Croatia would be a huge draw...

ah. returning to the days of no home field advantage for Canada

Thank you for sharing, that is what I suspected and that is why I suggested France.

There are many "Canadians" of Italian, Portuguese, Serbian and Croatian decent and I can imagine many of these types cheering AGAINST Canada. That is not what we need. Like you said, any affinity to France would be less extreme and the I can picture the crowd cheering for both teams if you know what I mean. Same with England; in most cases English support among Canadians is casual and you are less likely to get the crowd cheering AGAINST Canada, and you will still likely sell out the game.

For that reason, England or France makes alot more sense then Italy or Portugal.

Not that large???? The French community in Montreal is huge and growing fast. The last figures I heard were over 100 000 French in Montreal alone. Canada and France have a special immigration agreement and a lot more come in our direction than the other way around and the majority come to Quebec for obvious reasons. The subject of the French taking over is a regular topic of bitching among Quebecois/jokes among the French immigrants. I don't understand how one can live in Montreal and not see this unless you spend all of your time in the West Island. I do agree with you there is no affinity for France, indeed despite obviously being fully French-speaking immigrants the French are pretty unpopular with the Quebecois. The French don't seem to be as tied to the mother country as some other communities like Italian or Portugese. I am also always surprised that most of them don't really like soccer though those that do are usually fairly fanatic. However, if the French national team were to play in Montreal it would draw a huge number of expat French.

Its exactly what they should do. Making money is now the priority.

I think there are better ways to make money than to play Portugal or Italy in Toronto. If we are going to play a big nation at home in order to make money we should play France or England or even Germany (who are coming to North America to play the USA next year).

In my opinion, given our teams lack of friendlies in general, there is no wrong way to go about being on the field... Providing it makes money.

USMNT sticks it out with Mexico on the regular ... They get heavily outdrawn in most cases but in the process they are also putting $ in the bank, getting their team experience, and building the fan base. Now being cannon fodder for Portugal or Italy in Toronto might not be as beneficial but it could at least get us money to play for other matches. Best to start somewhere...

Hell with the number of ex-pats in the GTA there are probably a few other teams you could try. Just get the team on the field, these matches will pay for lesser ones against more relevant opponents and maybe leed to reciprocal agreements where we'll get even more practice.

I work with several of them and though they are aware they are part of a trend, I've never heard that they are as high a number as that. As you alluded to, I haven't met many who like soccer. A lot of them like extreme sports and the like. In any case, my point was that most people in Montreal would be going to a France friendly for the same reasons they would go to a Brazil, England or Germany game. To see a large world class country play.
