2018 vs. 2022

There seems to be a group of Vs who have basically already written off 2018 and are focusing on 2022. This seems quite hasty to me, but what do others think?

Related question: Can we have a list of players under, say, 26 who we could see playing a role in the 2018 campaign?

Keepers:

Borjan

Tomer

Stillo

Roberts

JLL?

Defenders:

De Jong

Hainault

Morgan

Edgar

Henry

Nana

Straith

Fresenga

Ouimette

Midfielders

Johnson

Piette

Stinson

Teibert

Aleman

Alderson

Saiko

Di Chiara?

JBB?

Forwards

Cavallini

Jackson

Ricketts

REB

Haber

Sodade?

James?

Clarke?

What do people think of this list? Better/worse than comparable lists in the past? Who have I missed?

After being depressed for 24 hours, I have to try to feel like (with some inevitable changes) hope springs eternal! C'mon Les Rouges!!!

No Josh Simpson?

Well, I didn't mean this to be a comprehensive list of all the players who might contribute (e.g. Simpson, Hutch etc.) but wanted to focus on the younger players under, say, 26 years old right now so that they would be under 30 by the time of the next semi-final WCQ round in 2016.

Writing off the 2018 campaign is ridiculous. There's absolutely nothing to be gained by writing off the next 8 years and effectively bypassing a generation of players (anyone born before '92, thanks for not coming out!). The players that will form the core in 2020-22 are in their teens right now, putting them out to slaughter as MNT players would do more harm then good. Diverting funds away to bolster the youth programs doesn't guarantee any of those players actually become solid pros either so the money gets wasted on failed prospects.

Further, having the program in limbo creates the impression it's even more of a wreck then it is which means more player defections, less money (sponsors would bail) and good coaches, administrators etc. wanting nothing to do with us. Awesome.

Stop with these lists, no one knows who's still going to be in the game and playing well in 4 or 10 years.

I agree that 10 years out is too far, and that we won't know everything about players for 2016, but that time frame is much more foreseeable.

Anyone who is writing off our chances in 2018 already hasn't watched enough soccer in their lives. Predicting who is going to make a World Cup 6 years out is almost impossible.

+1

Just think about 2008... Jackson was playing 4th division football, we thought DeRo was done.. we didn't even play Jazic last cycle, we thought JDG would still be good, no one thought Ricketts would be a MNT player, Simpson wasn't nearly the player he is now, a guy like Piette was 13 years old.. imagine the Canadian Soccer Crosby is 13 somewhere right now (with no lineage anywhere else)? Please football gods, you owe us.

IDK if he'd be around if we qualified but we need Hutchinson with this team going into the 2018 qualifying, hes a class player and without him we look so bad and do not currently have a replacement for him. If one pops up great, but seeing as he can play a number of positions I really hope he stays in the program. Also I hope Simpson has a role to play as well, if we are going to qualify for 2018 we need young guys to step up and we need to keep the technically gifted guys like Hutch and Simpson.

If he's still playing he'll obviously still be getting called, if he's not with Canada it'll be because he retired from international footy but I doubt he will. Nice to know that even if he is beat out of the midfield at some point he can play right back.

Ok, granted on some of this, but Piette was 13 years old 4 years ago and he didn't have any role in this WCQ campaign. Cavallini was 15 years old 4 years ago, and didn't really have a significant role either in this campaign. My point is that anyone under 16 right now will almost surely have no role in the next 4 years (i.e. through the semi-final round of qualifying for the 2018 WC).

There will always be surprises, and changes, of course, but the young players who will form the core of next cycle's semi-final round are generally between the ages of 17 and 25 right now.

I find it a bit concerning that we don't have much talent in the 23-28 age group. We'll be looking to the '83s (Hume, Hutchinson, Simpson) for leadership to carry us forward. There does not seem to be a wealth of experience behind them, however. From the '85s there's DeJong, as well as Johnson and Edgar from the '87s. Certainly Jackson and Ricketts are available but don't strike me as having the quality we need up front.

The guys from our failed Olympic qualifying are next in line but they have next to no senior caps. After that there are a bunch of promising youth, but they will not have matured yet and will be lacking the experience of having gone through a qualifying cycle. We need to give a lot of players a lot of experience in the next 3 years before the next WC cycle begins.

I just got my hands on Football Manager 2013 Beta so had to add a few! :D

Doesn't look to bright but this is list missing at least a few youngsters who are unknown 13-15 years old right now...

We should still aim for the hex and hope for the best. If we make it to 2018 we are not ready just hope we wont get embarrassed.

For 2022 we can only guess 3-5 players... its a complete blank page right now!
