RJB
Just watching the semi-finals, wondering to myself if the women's tournament will become u-23 similar to the men's tournament. The Women's World Cup is getting bigger and bigger, and you wonder if FIFA will move to protect this. I'd be in favour of this, so that there is a clear World Champion. Jcm144
I dont see this immediately happening, but could be in the foreseeable future. Considering the womens game is getting more popular you could see a CONCACAF, or Euro tournament being implemented. It does seem very stange that the womens soccer 4 year cycle is squeezed into 2 years with Olympics and World Cup being played back to back summers. Free kick
It wont become a U23 unless the WWC grows in stature to a level comparable to the senior mens WC . The main reason why the olympic tournament for men is an U23 is because FIFA does not want the IOC to to upstage its own (FIFA's) event which is the WC. by restricting the players who can play in teh Olympic tournament to U23's, FIFA is protecting its brand (the Wold cup). This is not an issue with sports like hockey and basketball because their world champions are no where near as popular.
