Scottish international Kenny Miller looks set to join Whitecaps

An excellent signing but Caps would still need another CM to partner Robson/Koffie.

-------Mattocks--------

-Robson---Miller-----Richards

-----Koffie----Davidson---

Davidson being the "weak" link. Good player, but Caps need to upgrade that starting spot.

Caps would still have Hassli, Sanvezzo, Barbara, and some day Harris off the bench. Plus Watson and Thorrington in CM. Obviously some other youngsters like Clarke, Teibert, and Alderson.

For me Sanvezzo is better than Mattocks, but OK. Hassli could be offloaded for a real quality CM (someone along the pedigree of Frings, but ideally a bit younger). Thorrington and Harris are injured so often it's time to offload them if you can. Caps not likely going to get a good draft pick this year right? (Or will they get the Phila top pick for SLT?). Is Alderson ready to take Thorrington's spot near the First 18? Clarke and Teibert should both be loaned out somewhere (when Clarke recovers from his injury that is).

Bonjour has done well, but if they can sell Mitchell and then upgrade at CB to partner Demerit then that's a must too. Yeesh, Caps are still clearly an expansion team, eh? Work in progress.

I do think Miller is a fine, fine player. But in looking abroad, why are all Canadian teams looking at guys 32+? Miller is the YOUNGEST name I've heard bandied about in a while. As I said on the front page, for our DPs we don't seem to be concerned with players' futures, only their past.

If Vancouver sign Miller, will they still play the 4-2-3-1 and what would this mean for Mattocks (assuming Miller would play the lone striker role)?

I can see us trying Miller as the CAM/CF with Mattocks up front.

Rochat and Koffie are good together in DM role. Robson out Left and Richards out Right. Meaning Camilo and Hassli the odd men out still.

Harvey has looked good in the back 4 as of late as well, so the XI is pretty much set it would seem.

To be perfectly honest I'm a little bit skeptical about picking up a guy who's on the wrong side of 30 and only worth ~10 goals a season in the championship. Ya he could be an asset, but for how long? And assuming he plays as a withdrawn striker, playing in behind Mattocks or Camilo, what does he bring to the team that Le Toux wouldn't have (playing in that position, as opposed to ineffectively at right wing), other than being 5yrs older and a lot more expensive? IMO we should either be setting our sites little higher or a little younger.

I have to agree. His scoring ability seems pretty volatile, similar to Hassli. One goal in his last twenty-two games is not good.

As much as I want to see Whitecaps have a high quality team that is capable of winning a championship, I was actually hoping for a bigger name signing. I don't see Miller making the team significantly better anyway, and I don't see him filling up the rest of the stadium.

With players such as Saha being courted in the past, I was really hoping for a player of his quality to be signed. Seems like the Miller deal is done though, so hopefully he brings his shooting boots and some confidence with him.

Curious what this means for Hassli. Seems like him and Mattocks are going to have to find some chemistry together in the coming weeks if he hopes to stick around.

I agree with your points. I'm not thrilled with these old guys being brought in either. It almost looks like they are going for a cup run but really (with what seems to me to be an unlikely outcome) had a nicely developing side otherwise.

Not to mention we are looking for some chemistry for Robson, and Miller should fit that bill perfectly.

Yeah and Le Toux and Hassli were supposed to be the French Connection as well. Turn FIFA 2012 off, players nationalities don't actually mean chemistry on the pitch lol...but at least Robson and Miller have actually played together before. Actually within the last 12 months I believe as well

Scottish supporters I talk to says he's an older Kris Boyd -with work rate and a good attitude. Despite all the theoretical offense, we're struggling to score goals. Nobody can get their head on a set piece to save their life, and this is one o KM's specialties. Also, don't be surprised if this is not a DP contract. At least not right away. The Caps have been acquiring allocation funds for some time preparing for this.

21 goals in 18 games for Rangers two years ago.

It's definitely a double edged sword with international players. Obviously you want that quality but with how the MLS schedule works, the team could be without several players at a time (Miller, maybe Robson, Koffie, Mattocks, Richards) with the first 3 experiencing extensive travel.

Exactly this has NOTHING to do with there Scottish heritage but the fact they know each other from the championship and international games

Koffie will soon be too old for national youth team duty with his country. So unless he gets a full men's call-up that issue is resolved. I don't know what the likelihood is that he gets a full call-up? Very?

Signing Miller is nice, and I suspect he'll score somewhere around 7-10 goals over the remainder of the season. I hope, anyway. But the club still needs a top centre midfielder to partner Koffie. Someone a step-up from Thorrington and Davidson. I wish that Alderson would get his shot in there...but maybe next year. I am not suggesting he is better than Thorr or JMD right now....but appears he has the potential to be far better than they are now.

Unfortunately signing such a player will require the Caps sell or trade Hassli. I really Bonjour but that could be an upgraded position as well.
