Sam
I know there is already a thread about this in the MLS section of the forum, but I'm curious what people think this means as far as the national team. For me I think this is a positive move for JDG. He should get more playing time than he was getting in Toronto and as a bit of a random aside having guys like Hainault play their home games in CONCACAF-style heat doesn't hurt. BearcatSA
As long as he's playing, that's fine. But if he washes out down there and ends up riding pine, that's not a good thing.
jonovision
I think JDG would be a real asset in MLS to a coach that knows how to use his talents. I don't know the Dallas boss is such a guy, but it is clear that Mariner was not (right wing -- WTF?)
Keegan
If he's playing for a manager that actually uses him in his position that would be prefereable, I think Hyndman will be a lot better for him. Also looks like McKenna is heading to TFC according to Red Nation.
Esco0428
I think JDG will benefit going to FC Dallas. They are the type of team that seems to attempt to play a possession style of soccer. With David Ferreira slowly getting back from injury, I think he can partner up with him really well. Let's see what happens.

adrenaline11
He gets to play in a 4-5-1 on a more regular basis now which can only be a good thing because Hart is likely to stick that formation for the forseeable future.

Very good point! When did that happen? Well okay, not LITERALLY just saying the DeRo had a really good season for DC United, which had to make Winter go "damn" a few times, that DeRo wasn't at his disposal instead. Take the cheque signing gesture and the fan hate aside, he would have been as good a DP for the money as Koevermans or Frings, at a similar age. My hope is that De Guzman starts playing really well for Dallas, in other words.
madmonte
I'd take the reigning MLS MVP in De Rosario for $663,000 over Koevermans for $1,563,000 or Frings for $2,414,000. For that matter, good god can we get a Wondolowski for 300k! My worry is, that with JDG's contract coming up this year, that he may just retire...his stock is obviously never going to be the same in Europe, now...and there's no way he gets signed for DP money in MLS when his contract is up. So from the CMT standpoint, that's my concern now.

Even if it's not for DP money, and let's say he gets what some think he is worth ($200k?) - where in the world is he going to get that money other than playing football? I really can't think of any scenario where he does retire, the guy can still play which means there still money to be made.

Yeah seriously...after years of making millions per season, if he saved enough to do it, he may look at it as an option, rather than making (at 200k) a tenth of what he did the year previous. He's made enough that he doesn't have to do it.

He's made enough that he doesn't have to do it. I would be curious what Julian has made over his career. Anyone know what he made at Coruna? That would be the only other time he would have been over a million per season, and he was there 4 years. He'll play until he's 35 for sure I would think, assuming his body holds up. jpg75
The only way Julian retires is if Canada doesn't make the Hex or he needs a total knee replacement. No way he ends his career in the middle of a WCQ campaign with a shot at the WC still attainable.

I am very interested in where in Europe he will land, because no way he is resigning as a non DP. Even if Dallas offer him a low end DP salary of 500 k, I still can't see him taking it without exploring every European option first. So being realistic, where do you guys see him ending up? Here is what I think: -strong team in segunda division -strong team in B2 -mid to upper table team in Super Lig that is not Tranzsonspor, Galatassary, Besitkas, Fernebache -mid to upper table team in Portugal that is not Porto, Benfica, or Sporting. -Spain because he has said before if he ever goes back to Europe he wants to only play in Spain -Germany because he may still have a good reputation there (and doesn't his daughter live there?) -Turkey because they are willing to take a risk on "name" players who are on the decline. -Portugal because the lifestyle and culture is similar to Spain (maybe Braga would be an option?) Keegan
Maybe Swansea will take a stab at him? Not sure where these posts about retiring are coming from, so let's just clarify: JDG had a rough time in MLS through injuries, coaching changes, mismanagement and his own fault. That being said anyone who knows JDG as a player knows how good he is and he will be sought after somewhere. No, it won't be at a midtable Bundesliga or La Liga side or at a DP salary but there will be options. This is a guy who is still a starter on the CMNT and undoubtedly one of our better players in the last three matches... come on guys, don't sell us so short! madmonte
I hope so...I guess I'm being pessimistic after seeing so many players have their careers come to a dead end in the MLS, but I find it hard to imagine a Euro club tossing 500k at an MLS guy with an injury list over the last couple years as long as Julian's, unless all reports on Julian were favorable. Right now, they aren't, really. And yeah all that retiring talk was from me saying I don't know how much of a paycut people expect him to take and still be motivated to continue, except as pointed out by Canada's WC chances. I just know that when his contract comes up, I seriously doubt another MLS club throws DP money at him. But I'll lean to popular opinion on this one, and say that yeah if you are still good to go, maybe to a player like Julian, the money doesn't matter as much as the soccer. He is usually a class act, I'll give him that

It's not like he's facing a pay cut at a supermarket and thinking of another career path. If anything his last few overpaid years may give him incentive to accept a pay cut. Keegan
Just send them a tape of the Canada-USA game. He completely bossed the centre of the park. +1 A year ago I was a lot less high on JDG... this was at a time when he was coming off a major injury combined with our awful Gold Cup. Since then JDG has put in some damn good performances that people tend to forget.. he was great throughout the CCL run and in our first ever victory against Columbus. The first time I had seen him live since the Gold Cup was the July 2, 2011 Canada final and I thought he was great that match. After watching him again last month he was great once again... clearly the TFC staff missed those and they never capitalized on his form.
jpg75
I don't think Julian made a lot of money in Spain. When he joined La Coruna they were swimming in 90M Euros of debt and he was a younger, relatively unknown guy from Hannover signed on a Bosman to a 4 year contract. That was the only contract he played under while in Spain. Pretty sure that's why he jumped at the offer of $1.7M per on a 3.5 year deal with TFC. madmonte
+1 from me as well. I'm also one of those that in the past has said that he often plays that way for TFC as well, but the solid play gets ignored amid the losses and expectation of goals. My opinion hasn't been the norm though, on the whole people bitch about him, especially TFC fans. But that same way he bossed the Canada midfield, he'd shown glimpses of it under Winter's system too

Also looks like McKenna is heading to TFC according to Red Nation. Can't believe no one has commented on this yet. That would be so awesome, we need all the help we can get at centre back and Big Kev would be perfect. Really hope this comes true, although from a MNT point of view him getting one last shot with a Bundesliga club would obviously be better. Just wanted to add best of luck to Jules in Dallas. No way the man retires, not when he still has a shot at Brazil. And if you believe him possibly with his brother.
