Sam
Really interesting article from "In Bed with Maradona" (which as an aside is one of the best football journals online) about American player development and how it is far too complex. Lot's of the examples are obviously very applicable to Canada and there are only a few things in the article that I disagree with. http://inbedwithmaradona.com/journal/2012/6/28/arrested-development-streamline-or-bust-for-the-us.html
A_Gagne
I think we have many of the same issues historically, but thankfully, dude to lower resources and population (ironically) we are starting to streamline faster than they are... How many of our U17 and U20 players now do not play/develop in the youth side of a professional team? This has had positive results, but however, at the same time, until we can get a domestic solution in place for what to do with a player once he turns 18 we will continue to flounder at the Sr. level. alberta white
Really interesting article from "In Bed with Maradona" (which as an aside is one of the best football journals online) about American player development and how it is far too complex. Lot's of the examples are obviously very applicable to Canada and there are only a few things in the article that I disagree with. http://inbedwithmaradona.com/journal/2012/6/28/arrested-development-streamline-or-bust-for-the-us.html The first half of the article pretty much sums up my experience at Schoolboy level back in the UK 30 years ago. started on the field kicking the ball about with my brother. Got picked for the school team at U10, Picked up by a Semi-Pro North East Counties Side at about 13. Failed to grow the requied extra four inches to have a shot at going pro as a goalie. Still, that same semi-pro side boast having both Brian Dean and Aaron Lennon in its ranks either side of me. Organised (but not overly competative) Soccer in elementary School is where it should be. I personally don'yt like the cost been associated with tax dividends. To me its like Business rates at hotels, because they are tax deductable they tend to be pricey. I think a similar mindset has creapt into sport in the same way. Kicking a ball out for a kid in Alberta is outstandingly expensive. To Play indoor my boys are stumping up $300 a year $ 400 to play outdoor. and thats community, which to be honest is not the best coached level. So thats 700 bucks a year to kick a ball about. as I have Five kids and I have to be fair to even the non-players thats $3500 per year to find. Personally, on the coaching side I did it once- never again as I don't need the agro. Actually thats not quite true. I will coach but not as a team manager that way leads to madness and pencils up the nose!
