Robert
Let's find out what the Voyageurs really want. What would you rather see: A) The Men's National Team advance to the Hex. or, The Women's National Team win the Gold Medal in London.
Footscray
A - not even close for me. I wish the women's team well but I don't really follow them closely myself.

Redcoatsforever
C) This is a false dichotomy and you're going to bring it up as "proof" that Montagliani is neglecting the men in favour of the women.

Joe MacCarthy
I'll play along with Robbi's latest V's ass smooching. It's quite easy, I'd rather see the women win gold. What good is the hex if we don't make it to the Show. If the question was Gold Medal or making the Show, I might have to think about it and probably pick the Show if only for visibility and financial reasons. Because unless the present crop of players got Orval Tessier heart transplants we ain't getting out of any WC group.

redhat
Why is it either/or ? I mean I really (for decades!) want desperately for our MNT to reach the World Cup, but why should it be at the expense of our women's team having Olympic success? Being a supporter means supporting Canada no matter what. Period.

madmonte
A for me...but to be honest, B is a MUCH bigger victory for Canadian soccer. Being tops in the world, vs cracking the top 32...not exactly tough to see which is the bigger victory there. But then this is JUST making the hex, right? I'll change it then. B for me...but A if you change it to men's team making it to the World Cup, rather than just the hex... Reasoning is that the World Cup is a bigger stage than the Olympics as far as soccer is concerned. Hell, so is the Euros...and so is the Women's World Cup... You can argue with that...I'm not saying the Olympics aren't at all important, but fact is that soccer gets diluted there in the fanfare for all the sports that the olympics represents in combined fashion. It's not ALL about football...the World Cup is. Hell. Let's try to rank it, so here's the breakdown for importance for me 1-Men win world cup 2-Women win world cup 3-Men qualify for world cup 4-Men Win olympics 5-Women win olympics 6-men qualify for hex 7-Women qualify for Women's World Cup (it's pretty much expected so hard to get excited for) 8-Men Qualify for Olympics 9-Women qualify for Olympics I'd further add CONCACAF gold cup...and that is big too...but I kept the list to world stage type stuff. Joe MacCarthy
Now that we've had our fun. Robbi what was the real reason for this. You've sucked us all in with your seemingly benign little poll now tell us what CSA conspiracy will you spout for us based on the fact that a few here hate women's soccer. I expect a long-winded response declaring that an overwhelming majority of voyageurs would prefer to see the men have success than the women (because it's apparently one or the other now) and that Mont Pete needs to wake up and shut off the funding for the women's program in order for the men to be successful. paul-collins
You know, the men's team is just $1m a year short in success. That's all it will take!
jpg75
You know, the men's team is just $1m a year short in success. That's all it will take! I know you're kidding around at Roberts expense, but that's probably a fairly accurate figure. Three home friendlies per year (200-250K expense) and an extra 250-400K (per year) on a coach. Lord Bob
B. Let me think, do I want a major international title or qualification for a chance to qualify? Hmmm. Hmmmmmmm.
TFCRegina
Both. And spending money on the women for the Olympics at this point will have little to no effect on the men making the Hex... There's time for like 1 friendly before the next four qualification matches...maybe 2 if they squeezed it in. Not enough time to whip a squad into a stronger shape. Three home friendlies per year (200-250K expense) and an extra 250-400K (per year) on a coach. Accurate figure, yes. Accurate assumption, hell no. I went back through the previous trollthreads where I found Vic and CoachRich discussing financials, both CSA and OTP - so I know the programs are both less than $2m from direct CSA funding. Were the CSA to pull any of their funding from the women's program, I'd bet the OTP funding would disappear pretty quickly, so the hit on the women would be closer to $3m to get that $1m into the men's program. Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul.
