hectorj
French possessions New Caledonia and Tahiti will fight for the Oceania crown this weekend and a place in next year's Confederation Cup. New Caledonia beat NZ 2-0. They tied the Solomon Islands earlier. CONCACAF #4 plays the Oceania winner, correct? Oh, how the mightiest of the Pacific minnows have fallen. They get one more chance to qualify for WC though.

deschamp86
My understanding is that they (New Caledonia) get to play in the Confederations Cup, but the top 4 teams in Oceania will have a group round to decide who goes to the World Cup.
Marc
When Australia moved into the Asian Confederation, why didn't FIFA just collapse Oceania's federation into Asia's?

jpg75
Yeah, just read this: http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/football/shock-loss-knocks-nz-out-of-cup-20120608-201ig.html "New Zealand has been knocked out of the Oceania Nations Cup after a shock 2-0 semi-final loss to New Caledonia. Second-half goals by Bertrand Kai and Georges Gope-Fenepej eliminated the All Whites, who will miss out on next year's Confederations Cup in Brazil. New Caledonia will meet Tahiti in the final and New Zealand will take part in the third-place playoff against Solomon Islands. New Zealand's 2014 World Cup hopes are still alive due to their top four finish."
alberta white
Relativley speaking, that has to be as embarassing as Englands failure to make the 1974 finals. Aussie must be p***sing themselves over this one.

CanadianSoccerFan
I can't believe that one of Tahiti or New Caledonia will be in next years Confederations Cup. This will be such a gong show!

madmonte
lol before you start a thread, do more research. I don't usually check this forum and I saw the thread title and went...ummm...read the rules closer? But yeah, as ob1 said in the other forum, NZ was up against it on their 4th game in 8 days playing on one of the worst pitches in the world, so I'm thinking New Caledonia wouldn't beat them easily a 2nd time. Far more embarassing - England lost out in 1974 to a very good Polish team that finished 3rd in the World Cup and might easily have won it. CanadianSoccerFan
In the 3rd place game they needed a last gasp winner against the Soloman Islands to win 4-3.
amacpher
When Australia moved into the Asian Confederation, why didn't FIFA just collapse Oceania's federation into Asia's? This. Ridiculous how easy NZ's route to the World Cup is. At the very least, they could keep OFC but then only give 0.25 spots in the WC .

Hurm <rubs chin in studious manner> Methinks one may be close to offering the Lapaz defence in mitigation here. The Aussies use to rack up pointy ball scores in this Conference. The Kiwis have really got no excuse.
Guest Brethers
surely New Caledonia would have played the same amount of games as NZ? So they would have the same fatigue and rotation issues. And I'm sure they both played on the same pitch, so NZ have no leg to stand on saying the pitch was crap. It was the same for both

The logic being that a superior team will be unable to pass the ball crisply.

I've always found that logic to be unfair though, who's to say that the inferior team don't like passing it around? One of the reasons why ITV commentators so much, they repeatedly support the "better" team and are surprised every time the weaker team shows they are capable of playing football

One of the reasons why ITV commentators so much, they repeatedly support the "better" team and are surprised every time the weaker team shows they are capable of playing football Thats because ITV commentators, in the main, are utter muppets! Take Clive Tyldesley for example. During the Charity match for the QueensJubilee, he could not even get the "Hello to Jason Issacs" greeting correct. Guest Brethers
ITV commentators are muppets, yes. They commented that we (Chester) weren't in the FA cup this year due to previous financial misdemeanours, which pained us in such a bad light. When the real reason was Steven Vaughan ruining our club and having to reform as a fan owned team, and you have to play in the previous season's FA trophy before you can go in the FA cup, and you can only play in the FA trophy after a year playing in the league. I hate ITV! BBC are bad too though, was watching Denmark v Holland and Jonathan Pearce was having a tugging session over Holland for the whole game. Kept saying Denmark were fortunate and crap like that. Anyways, yeah New Zealand just need ot admit they played bad and sort it out for the WCQ

Saying that Darren Fletcher on the radio just now, decribed how he could see colour man Jan Molby's neck muscles straining as the Danish Equalizer went in! But the vast majority of time, a crap pitch favours the weaker team.
