Samuel Piette vs Keven Aleman

For U-18 these guys could be considered as our top 2 prospects for the national team in the future. I know they play two completely different styles, but in terms of Canadians, which of these two do you guys think has a better chance at a solid club career in Europe? Or if you think they both do, who's will be better?

If you want to introduce others to the argument like Carreiro or Gasparatto feel free, but try to make bold predictions.

I think, of the two, Samuel Piette is the safe bet to have a solid club career. Aleman has got some skills for sure, but it seems to be more difficult for an offensively minded player to hold down a regular job. Also, while he had a good U17 qualifying tournament, I've seen standout performances at that age only to see the player struggle in later years. I thought Ryan Gyaki was going to be a solid player after watching his U20 qualifying performances. I hope I'm wrong because Aleman is the type of player we need.

As for other possibilities, I've always been impressed by Michael Petrasso. I think Jordan Hamilton could also turn into something special.

Right now though my money is on Piette. If Alderson starts getting some real playing time, he could be part of the conversation too.

I think all of the names above have potential - Gasporotto and Alderson over the rest (including Piette). Another who I have seen live a couple times and impressed was Tyler Pasher. He was hurt during the U17 WC.

Well I think Aleman could go about two rounds with Sam before things go lopsided. Sam's a big boy, holds a weight advantage over Kevin. I got 5-1 odds on Sam taking this bout in the third round, knock out.

In all seriousness, if we're looking at young prospects, I'd have to say Lucas Cavalini is probably my top prospect right now, since he's playing in a football hotbed like Uruguay. Probably lots of really excellent young talent down there he's competing against week in week out.

Especially after Keven cut his hair and lost all his strength.

I forgot about Fraser Aird, he'll probably end up being a solid Premiership player someday.

Alderson plays USSDA U-18, USL PDL, and MLS Reserves. Interesting that he doesn't count as getting "real playing time" whereas whatever the hell Samuel Piette does in Europe while waiting for a contract isn't a concern.

Seeing as how I was the one that said that, I guess this was directed at me. What I meant was, if the move to a Bundesliga team goes through for Piette, he should get some time with in the 3. Bundesliga or the Regionalliga or something like that. I hold that in higher regard in terms of development than playing PDL and MLS reserves. That's just an opinion though.

I have Piette and Alderson on pretty level footing, I just see the potential for more development opportunities for Piette than Alderson at this point in time. Again, just an opinion.

Funny how all of a sudden Bryce Alderson isn't even considered one of our top prospects. WTF?

Also I think Daniel Stanese could have a very solid career.

Sorry, just to clarify, I'm talking about our overseas prospects here. If Alderson moves overseas then yes, he is part of this conversation too, as well as others in the thread...

I didn't do a good job of specifying that up top, but it IS what I meant initially. However if you guys want to add who is top overall in that mix, as you did, perfectly reasonable.

I fully admit to being irritated at the "Vancouver signs Canadians just for the quota and then stuffs them in a fridge and they never play!" narrative which I see here lately, and that makes me a little short-tempered.

We have hopes that Piette gets his German contract and gets good time in 3.BL or Regionalliga. We also have hopes that Alderson starts getting into some goddamned MLS games.

If there's anything previous Canadian youth international players have tought us, it's impossible to predict will who turn out to be a decent pro, or a pro at all.

Precisely. Now go ahead and defy the impossible and predict anyways.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to write.

Did he declare for Scotland, or am I imagining that?

He played under Darren Fletcher's watch, scoring for Scotland's U-17's in a Euro Qualifier vs Denmark this past March:

"Goals from Lewis Kidd and Fraser Aird were sadly not enough in Greenock, while not even victory could clinch qualification for the visitors."

As a Rangers Supporter everything i read about Fraser is positive, i expect him to start one day or soon to be bought by a English club.

He plays with the U19 team and the U17 team from time to time.

There's this kid that lives in the same condo complex I live in, he's about 9 yrs old and has mad skillz on the ball. Definite senior team prospect and pro prospect at this point.

Now just listen to him carefully when he's pretending to score the World Cup-winning penalty kick in the nearby park. Is he pretending to be Lionel Messi or Dwayne De Rosario?

Really tough to say but my money is on Piette. Alderson and Teibert need to move somewhere to play. Joe DiChiara is ahead of Piette in club terms so who knows what is happening there. Aleman appears likely to have a good career but we'll know more if he starts getting into his clubs first/reserve team in the next year(ish).
