TFC - MTL (second leg) [R]

Recommended Posts

Well good sirs, in response to the dishonourable Trillium of Ottawa i propose a Blue Team elimination thread to discuss the shortcomings of our good friends in La Belle Province. Will there be a suicide watch tonight? How much poutine will go to waste, waterlogged from all their tears?

Not cool. This could spoil the result for others.

Does anyone know why Eckersley was sent off? Was at the game but couldnt see why nor did anyone else. Was listening on the radio in the car (on the way home) and John Mollinaro stated that even in the press box, No one has a clue why. I thought TfC wwere playing in Panama tonight. With that ref.

I am not one to complain about the refs usually. But this really felt like the games in Panama whereby it seems like the ref is working for the other team.

He got tangled up with the MTL player who stepped in front to challenge him. During that he sort of stepped on him. The ref gave a free kick to TOR since Ecks tripped up on him, but then the MTL player showed cleat marks or whatever and the ref inferred that Eckersley stomped on him. It certainly didn't look intentional, his leg just ended up underneath where Eckersley was stepping.

... his leg just ended up underneath where Eckersley was stepping.

I may have to try using that on a local ref this summer.

Intentional or not, I don't think the ref was wrong to show the red. It could have been either colour, but the way Eck stepped in the guy could have ended up with a broken leg.

On another note, what a friggin game by Henry. This guy is going to anchor the Nats back line for a whole bunch of years.

Henry was superb. If he can get establish himself as TFC CB this season that would be great for our MNT backline future unless he pulls out a Nana...

I thought Kocic was excellent once again (minus one play where he was caught in no man land).

Overall I thought all Canadians who were involved for TFC had a good game but I'm not sure about Cann, he's really ackward.

Was an absolutely BRUTAL call. Especially highlighted given that Eckersley looked like he was going to have a banner night. Had the bit between his teeth right out of the gate.

I like to think I'm a pretty forgiving sort of guy but you know what? I don't care if the ref left his eyeglasses in the taxi. I don't care if his glaucoma was acting up and was being irritated by the cold wind. That call, and most especially the resulting redcard was just bat-**** crazy. Twilight Zone stuff.

Couldn't believe it and I'm sure the TFC bench was in equal disbelief but it really did announce to all in attendance what was coming tonight from the officiating team. I'll give them this, they were consistent. Awful, awful, awful.

If you want justification for firing Winter & Co. for anything this year it would be for not immediately appealing that card. Cause if they don't, they should be fired. Tonight. On the spot.

Brutal.

P.S. Montreal caught off guard by TFC tonight me-thinks but still managed to lose without style though. Not one of their more flattering traits.

All I have to say

Is FINALLY, god TFC its been embarrassing calling you the most Canadian team still is, but at least you've won a game this year

Did you watch the Champions League? Meh. Not that you would know anything about that tournament.

Never let your anger cloud your judgement.

As on previous visits some of the Impact fans spat on threw objects (at least a couple of ripped out seats, lighters and a lit flare) at TFC fans walking past below them. Apparently they got into it with the cops too.

Yup. That one of the worst I've ever seen

Agreed, now that I've finally had a chance to re-watch the game, as none of us in the stands could figure out what happened (and they never showed a replay on the screen in the stadium). I can't believe that Craig Forrest seemed to think it was a good call and that Eckersley did a "high" challenge - what the hell? Eckersley was in possession of the ball and I doubt he even saw the Impact playing coming in from behind.

What I have not been able to figure out as yet is why Bob De Klerk tried to attack or get at the Impact coach after the game. I thought he was being restrained from physically attacking the Ref but on the replay of the game I saw that it was actually Jesse Marsch he had to be restrained from.

The whole game was a pretty poor display of football. Passing, shooting, etc. The officials just wanted to be part of it.

That said, Eckersley is a Kevin Harmse-esque red card waiting to happen almost every match. He was probably unjustly sent off but he's also gotten away with a few over the last year and a half.

Nice to see the CSA spreads the crappy officials around. We got a fat linesman who called back our first goal when the player was clearly 3 feet onside. It makes me wonder if the CSA should just abandon player dev and leave it to the clubs and try to improve the officiating? Maybe just give up on the officiating? They can't seem to put a decent crew together.

See you guys in the finals.

I have been quite low key about complaining of MLS refereeing over the past 6 years. But but i cant say the same about Concacaf champions league and the Voyageurs cup.

I am probably in the minority but, even though MLS officiated matches have their warts, I find that MLS officiated matches rarely (if ever) raise my ire as to the degree that Concacaf and Cnd championship stuff that i have seen in four years.

off the top of my head:

- The scandalous stench of the away matches played against Panamanian clubs. Where it looked pretty clear that the ref was paid to help the local clubs

- Last nights red card infraction that nobody saw.

- the ball that crossed the line but goal that wasn't awarded from last year in the final game.

- the foul nobody saw to Jim Brennan (on a corner kick!! .. imagine that) in the first year of V cup game that resulted in PK and winning goal.

Guess I am alone in thinking the red wasn't entirely unjustified. Curious...

The RC is around 1:30 in that video:

http://www.torontofc.ca/video/2012/05/09/t...pact-may-9-2012

I think it's the linesman who made the call. Gantar doesn«,t have his hand in his pocket when he's approching the Impact player on the ground but he's looking on the sideline and seems to be talking to his AR. Maybe that why initially Gantar gave the FK to TFC.

On that replay it seems like Eck did indeed stomp on Ubi leg. Could've been a broken leg on that play. I would like to see the AR angle on that one, maybe that would give us a better idea of Eck intention.

So because no one saw the red card infraction from our seats far away from the pitch that means the ref who was near to the players was wrong? Eckersly could have broken Ubi's leg on that play. I hope it wasn't on purpose but that was a red card in any league with any ref.

And the reffing is bad in the VC but no worse than in MLS. My biggest disappointment now that we are in MLS is the reffing, it is disgraceful. Indeed the reffing is even worse than it was than in NASL. No I don't think the NASL refs are better than the MLS ones but the MLS ones are the same level as the NASL ones. Add the same poor level of ref to a faster game played at a higher pace and the result is even worse reffing. There are a few exceptions, a few good MLS refs but I haved watched some absolutely horrendously reffed games this year in MLS. For the most part USSF and CSA refs are crap regardless of which league they are in.
