Name the Ottawa NASL franchise

Recommended Posts

Given the apparent construction of the new stadia is now cleared, what about a name for the franchise ?

Use your best ideas, for both a franchise name, and a name for a supporters group.

Team name:

Supporter Group name:

Logo concept:

Trillium, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group owns the Ottawa Fury. Wouldnt the name simply stay the same?

Not exactly.

John Pugh owns the Ottawa Fury. Mr. Pugh and the OSEG have announced that they will jointly run the NASL franchise but I don't think there's been any specific details. I suspect all involved would create a new brand for the professional team with some link to the existing Fury programs.

1867 Ottawa for the club name

This or the 1850. OTTAWA 2014 could also work. I hope they don't go with a nickname - let the team earn a name from the supporters.

With a jersey with Ottawa colours (turquoise and blue? Red and white might be too cliche, not sure how to justify other colour combinations) like this:

(sponsor is on the back)

The logo should be really simple, maybe the shield from the coat of arms without everything, just the crossed rivers and "1850" in the top block.

I'm also partial to a circle crest with very basic letter/name graphic laid out. German teams have good examples which are more 'simple'. Or just buy the amazing old parks Canada logo with the beaver:

or something like the old ontario trillium:

These logos were smart and simple - easy to identify, draw/paint, but pleasing to the eye. Modern US style logos are too busy, even when they try to be simple (TFC, for example, should be simple but is a disaster with the different shades of grey on the shield). And any team with gradient and colour shading should be relegated to the PDL. I just hope it is not one of the 'modern' style with gradients and stupid stuff that will end up being changed every five-ten years for marketing. The most successful marks in sports have a 'classic' appearance (yes they always change but the best not drastically).

Using the city's motto some how would be good: "Advance-Ottawa-En Avant"

Supporters group: (too masculine) Fathers of Confederation, Canal Rats, The Colonel's Band.

Athletic Football Club of Ottawa (or AFC Ottawa for short). This allows a nickname to be developed by the fans, while still at least having some sort of nickname stupid media can't bastardize too badly - worst I could see is them being called the Ottawa Athletics by some ignorant reporter.

Supporters Group could be whatever they feel like, but seeing as how it's our national capital, perhaps something like Capital Region Army (CRA for short). Yes that is a bit tongue in cheek lol.

As for crest, I've always loved circular crests and I think one of the best ones out there is the style that Olympiacos has. What you could do with it is do the outline of the center block of parliament in the same style of drawing that Apollo is in O.'s crest, with AFC Ottawa at the top and 2004 in the bottom of the circle.

Not withstanding My love for Super Furry Ottawans, with their supporters group, THE BEAVER PATROL.

I'm in agreement with Tusacn. If they ditch the Fury moniker then an AFC Ottawa, compliments well a CFL Ottawa.

Two football Codes under one umberella, so to speak.

Personally, been a Brit, I normally default to AFC been the abreviation of ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB, but I actually Like ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB as well. Depends on who you think the demograph for this outfit would be.

As for a potential basterdization to Ottawa Athletic? Well, that also has a nice ring to it as well. Not too dis-similar to Chartlton Athletic, what?

Agreed

I can see the fury being the academy, and they will end up rebranding. Probably the only reason Mr. Pugh is involved with OSEG, and this nasl team for the reason of joining his Ottawa Fury to whatever the new team will be.

A few quick points:

1) If they go with one name for the CFL and NASL teams I think it should either include '67 or 1867 to match with the OHL Ottawa 67's team which is also under the OSEG umbrella. Having all three teams named a version of the same root name would be a nice touch, and in my mind the ultimate in cross marketing.

2) They could also take on the colour scheme of the OHL 67's as well (White, Red, Black)... I'm not sure, but I would imagine these are also Ottawa's civic colours, since most other Ottawa sports teams I can think of have historically used them. Either way, colour scheme should be civic colours.

3) Given that Ottawa is the only city in Canada that is actually becoming more french, I think it's essential that their name be palatable to both demographics.

1) That was one reason why I suggested 1867 Ottawa in the first place, given that the club's owners also own the jr. hockey team. Adds some symmetry

Given that the current Fury team includes a youth development pyramid and that the Fury ownership is part of OSEG, its inevitable that the current infrastructure will become part of the new teams structure.

Given that there will be some continuity between the Fury and the new NASL team, I don’t see why they can’t continue with the Fury name.

Fury FC… Ottawa Fury… Why not?

Yes, OSEG also owns the 67s, but from a historical vantage point, the Ottawa Fury has nothing to do with the 67s.

In terms of team colours, again, its not limited to the 67s or Sens. The Ottawa Fat Cats also have the same colours.
