Canadian Nationalization Countdown

So... after reading about Diego Costa over the past few days, does this mean Koffie's chances are not as bad as they might have once seemed?

Christian “Chaco” Giménez is now another one on the pile.

Doubts over 32-year-old Giménez’s eligibility were raised in the Panamanian press after Club América’s Argentina-born winger Rubens Sambueza was refused permission by FIFA to play for Mexico due to the fact he had played for Argentina’s Under-17 national team in the 2001 U-17 World Cup.

Reports filtered out that Giménez had also featured for an Argentine national team at the South American U-20 Championship, leading Panama to inquire about whether there had been a breach of FIFA rules. However, Giménez was adamant the tournament didn’t count as an official “class A international,” as in Sambueza’s case, in speaking to reporters Wednesday.

Koffie played in CAF u20? sounds the same as SAC u20 .

Gimenez was not a member of the Argentina squad that hosted the 2001 WYC. However, it is possible that he played for them during the South American youth championship earlier that year. Argentina did not need to qualify, but participated in the SAYC anyways so that might be where the problem has occurred? If that's the case then i can't believe FIFA screwed up their own rules. Whether Argentina needed to qualify or not and those games were essentially friendlies, the SAYC is still an official FIFA competition.

He's less than a year away of meeting FIFA's residency standards. To my knowledge he doesn't have permanent residency and it would still be a while longer before he got citizenship so unless he stays with a Canadian team which is unlikely, I don't see him ever playing for Canada.

He did not get called to the winter u.s. camp.

lol no of course he didn't, he's a LONG way away from making the US national team. Seriously, guys like Wondolowski were struggling to get playing time, and Mike Magee is just getting his first callup at age 29, and he's the current MLS player of the year. There's an article up on mlssoccer.com about Magee still needing to make a case to crack the roster for Brazil.

Brovsky will never be a part of the US picture. Which is probably a very main reason to consider Canada

Yes, Cristante is a known quantity on this board after his UCL appearance for Milan as a 16 yr old. Also as you pointed out he has Canadian birthrights through his father so he does not count as a "naturalized" player - which this thread is about.

He isn't progressing as Uruguay had hoped. Maybe we should keep track of this guy.

Not sure how he comes up in a thread about nationalizing players since he's Canadian by birthright (isn't his mom Canadian or something?)...but as far as his development he has been getting PT lately for Nacional and he just turned 20 a few weeks ago.

Sorry, I consider switching national FIFA allegiances the same thing as nationalizing a player. It's more semantics with the shorter outcome IMO. To me, whether it requires a separate thread or not, is the type of player we should be focusing on. Especially when most player don't stay long enough with a CDN MLS club to nationalize themselves.

Wrong thread. Also wrong speculation, I think, as he just turned 20, has four appearances and one goal for the top team in Uruguay (for whom he scored yesterday vs. Racing) who bought him as a prospect two years ago for 300 k. He's doing fine and would need a big setback in his career to consider playing for us: http://ca.soccerway.com/players/juan-cruz-mascia-paysee/175666/

Wrong thread.

Why not? This player is not listed in Canadians Abroad thread and he could possibly be brought over to the good guys. I think we should be a little less "strict" on the requirements of this thread.

Keeping an organized listed of all potential national players should be the focus, perhaps we update the name to satisfy all.

If I'm not mistaken, he's saying it's the wrong thread because Mascia is automatically Canadian by birth and therefore does not need to go through the nationalization process.

lol dude threads like that are a LOT of work, compile the list, make the thread, and ask for it to be stickied, and it probably will happen.

But to be clear...Nationalization is the process in which a player has no previous Canadian roots, but spends enough time on Canadian soil to become a Canadian citizen, so that is the focus of THIS thread
