DJT
Guidelines for this thread In this thread post match updates on all Canadians abroad for February 24 - March 1, 2012. If you find updates posted in some other thread or on the other Voyageurs forum then post them here as well, but be sure to credit the original poster. If there is news that is particularly significant (eg. someone scores a big goal, someone gets injured, etc.) then feel free to begin a new thread on that topic in order to draw greater attention or start a discussion, but also post that news here. Some comments on news posted in this thread are okay, but let's not let this thread go off into a long discussion. Used the ball OK as the game progressed." Sums up the comments. Was he playing LB?
jpg75
Bundesliga Köln 0 - 2 Bayer Leverkusen, Mckenna played 90 minutes in another loss for Cologne. Big Kev was caught ball watching on the first goal as the man he was marking scored the opener. The cross/set piece (i think it was a corner, but i might be mistaken, i saw the replay as the ball was being crossed in but from the marking it looked like a corner or FK) was driven to the far post where it was headed back across the area to the near post and headed by a Leverkusen attacker off the inside of the post. The rebound fell in front of the open goal and Kev's man scored. Also, at minute 33 he had the ball stripped which led to a dangerous counter attack for Leverkusen. In the 44th he did well to cover for his partner and snuff out a breakaway.

BearcatSA
Like I said, you can take the comments for what they are worth. I was under the impression that he was the left CB, with Duff (voted by some there as the MOTM) as his partner.
Grizzly
Big Kev was caught ball watching on the first goal as the man he was marking scored the opener. In the 44th he did well to cover for his partner and snuff out a breakaway. He was more or less at fault on the second goal as well. The guy who had the ball deked out the midfielder a bit but the midfielder was in a position where he could recover. Kev, however, goes towards the ball carrier and puts himself in a position where he couldn't do much of anything since he can not take a man and is not pressuring the ball carrier either. Another attacker runs behind Kev into the area he just vacated, the ball carrier passes him the ball and he is alone on the keeper and scores. And you are right on the first goal he just watches the ball and does not move to a useful position where he can negate any attacker. Indeed watching the ball is a particular bad habit of Kevin as you can see in many of the goals this year for which he bore responsibility. What makes it even worse is that he is not very fast and his anticipation of what is going to happen is often poor. Plus, as you can see in the 2nd goal, when he gets beat he stands and watches the play instead of busting his ass to get back. Considering the nice finish he would not have been able to stop goal number 2 if he had hustled back instead of stopping and watching but had the finish not been clinical he was in no position to prevent an attacker getting the rebound. Kevin also had a poor game last week in Koln's loss to Nurnberg. Kicker rated him a 5 which is quite bad and I suspect he will get a similar rating this week. Kevin is effective when he plays in a compact style of defence like he did with Cottbus but he is really lacking when the defending style is more open and he is facing speedy forwards who can pass. It is a bit worrisome considering that many of our CONCACAF rivals play that exact style. Don't know how long this video will stay on Youtube but here are the goals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjaNAEICuNE
Razcle
English Premier League Man City 3 - 0 Blackburn , Junior Hoilett played 90 minutes as City dominated the ball. That was a total domination of the ball by City. Jr did look like he belongs with that Blackburn team. Love to see him in red!

The 2 mids who let the Leverkusen attacker through to attack the backline were indecisive in their coverage, and the other CB lost his man on the run into the space Kevin vacates. But i fully agree with you on Kevins' limitations and it's becoming more evident as he ages, and the step he lacked has become two or three steps. He is still effective when he can close down his man and use his strength, but when he's in space and a fast attacker comes at him he's screwed. It is a bit worrisome considering that many of our CONCACAF rivals play that exact style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjaNAEICuNE I think that's a very accurate summary of McKenna, both his strengths and weaknesses. When he's protected, there's a reason why he's a BL 1. player. His strength in the air, arriving to defend attackers before they turn and getting a tackle in, his leadership in marshalling the back line; these are his strengths. But at virtually every level he's played, even at youth level, he's lacked speed relative to most defenders. I remember his U-16 coach here in Calgary relating a story about how people were somewhat dismissive when he went over to Germany for his trial with Cottbus, saying he was too slow. This coach said that he'd respond by saying that Kevin was so tough and savvy, Germany would suit him because he'd be around players with similar passion and soccer smarts. I guess the guy was right. I've held my breath a few times in Gold Cup games looking at how quick and mobile some CONCACAF teams are, but he and his CB partner, whether it's Hainault or Jakovic or whomever, have been generally very solid for us. I'd be surprised to see his next contract still being with a BL 1 team, but the guy has proved me wrong before.

Alex_K
Edwini-Bonsu wasn't in the squad for Eintracht's game in St. Pauli today (ended 0:0) - I'm pretty sure he is playing for the reserves instead then, who also play today. The game is still in progress, and I haven't seen a line-up posted so far, but I should be able to tell you for sure in a few minutes. Edit: I take that back - he actually was in the squad (as an unused sub). I couldn't see the game, so I went with the match report on the official site. He wasn't listed on the bench there, but after checking the other match-ups and some message boards, I see that he was on the bench, so it was a mix up by the writers of the Eintracht site. That phrase could be applied to about 66% of the defenders on the pitch in any given Saturday. Or Sunday in Ledley King's case. You'll know what I mean if you caught the Gunners-Spurs match this morning. LOL. Nightmares tonight! Get where everyone is going with this. Clocks beginning to tick a little louder for Big Kev, which is surprising because he's what 30ish? Really should be peaking about now but the wars do add up sometimes don't they? Got to take the good with the bad as they say. The man has been playing at a pretty high level now for 10 years. That doesn't say he's the best fit for Canada in CONCACAF WCQing given our player pool, but it does say a lot about something. Big Kev on the right, Jacovic on the left and The Guz parked in front. To my mind, if we can get it, that's a more than decent anchor.

Tangroo
Came off at half time with the score Norwich 0-1 United Believe it or not, I was actually at the Norwich game today (visiting family in Norwich). Simeon played really well in the first half before being subbed, and I must admit, I was surprised that they took him off. He was getting hacked a fair amount, so perhaps he picked up a knock. He was providing some great crosses and was generally getting under the skin of the Man U defenders. In general, Norwich deserved at least a draw and were unlucky to lose in injury time. Hopefully I'll have more to report on Simeon as I'll be heading to Stoke for the away match next weekend, followed by the Wigan match at home the week after. villus
Hoilett did'nt really get much time on the ball but Blackburn in general were overrun for the whole game, but it was encouraging to see that Hoilett dug in and worked hard on the defensive end, many games he has been pretty weak defensively so it was nice to see him work hard on that end of the pitch.
