Quality player, good from dead ball situations, and good at picking out a pass. While he's known for his crossing ability, the Whitecaps wouldn't really benefit from a move like this, BUT, I'm wondering if they could put him in the middle of the pitch and have him dictate play with his passing ability.

You'd suspect San Jose is in the frame given the partnership they have with Spurs, but maybe this will be Barber's last big coup. He brought Lee here, maybe he can bring Bentley here.

Thoughts?

Unless he is a rock at CB, not interested.

Are you crazy? That's a joke right?

David Bentley's 27yrs old, with 7 Sr. England Caps, and I don't care what his struggles at Spurs have been, IMO he would be way too good for MLS on his worst day. I remember fallowing him as an Arsenal youth player, and later at Blackburn. In my opinion he would automatically be one of, if not the, best dead-ball hitter's in the league - a skill that's at a huge premium in the MLS.

And @Sam Brown: Thanks for posting this, but I also have to disagree with your statement: "the Whitecaps wouldn't really benefit from a move like this"... Question: Harris vs. Bentley... hmmm let me think here...

I just really hope this isn't another F$ing LA Galaxy freebie... that would be the last thing the rest of the Western Conference would need. Other than the Barber connection I don't know what else would indicate that the VCWs would be his destination. It could just as easily be any other team. And if I was coming back off a knee injury it wouldn't necessarily be my first choice to end up on turf; although Vancouver's rehab/physio staff are apparently 2nd to none.

He's past-it. He wouldn't hold-up in the MLS I imagine, with the heat and "physicality" of the league. haha, sorry, had to say it before someone else did.

I'm sure he'd be a fine addition. He'd be the set-piece taker, and he'd come up with one or two spectacular goals, and a number of assists. But I wouldn't expect him to "pick up the pieces" or "destroy" anything in MF.

I'd not want him for 6 months. Either permanently or not at all.

He's not Canadian, so you won't get anyone here thinking the Caps should sign him. ;)

Bentley here would be massive. He's held out of his spot at Spurs by guys like Aaron Lennon, Niko Kranjcar Rafael Van Der Vaart, Luka Modric etc. He's not not playing because he's crap. He's literally been blighted by injuries and is on a squad with immense amounts of depth which is why he's been loaned and not sold. If Spurs thought he had nothing to offer they'd have sold him by now.

SB Nation speculates about San Jose as a possible destination:

Tottenham still own his contract and they have a partnership with the Earthquakes, which help set up Simon Dawkins' loan to San Jose, so Bentley to the Quakes makes sense, but that would be no more than speculation.

I completely agree that he's of a much higher quality than Harris, BUT, we don't have holes on the wings. There's no point in picking up a player we don't need. The Caps have openly discussed how they need to fill the void in midfield. I was simply suggesting that he be converted into a central midfielder, much like David Beckham has played recently, and take advantage of his ability to distribute the ball so effectively.

David Bentley is a risk no question about it. Is he healthy? is the big question. A major knee operation seems a questionable time to choose a path into a foreign league know for it's physical play, and it's even more grueling travel schedule and accommodations.

If he could prove healthy and handle the rigorous schedule the MLS has to offer clubs, he could be a linchpin to any MLS midfield. Since it's a loan deal they seem to be pursuing, I think the risk is minimized.
