As reported on kicker.de http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/2bundesliga/vereine/564050/artikel_straith-versuchts-eine-klasse-tiefer.html

My rough translation of the article:

Saarbruecken have scored a lot of goals this season but conceded more than other teams in the promotion hunt. So, Straith should help as he comes on loan from Energie Cottbuss. He passed his obligatory medical and has signed (on loan) with Saarbruecken 'til the end of the season.

Saarbruecken coach Juergen Luginger: "He's a versatile defender. He's strong in the air, among other things. At 21, he's shown what he can do, both in the 2. Liga and in games with the national team. He can help us right away and I'm happy we were able to do the deal and give ourselves another option in defense."

The article adds that he'll wear #2 with Saarbruecken and he still has a contract with Cottbus until 2013. He made 8 appearances with Cottbus this season, 38 in total over his career. 6 of his appearances this season were as a sub. He should change this in Saarbruecken.

FC Saarbruecken lie 5th in the 3. Liga, 4 points out of the 2nd automatic promotion spot, 3 points out of a playoff spot. Some of us will remember that this is the club Julian de Guzman played with in the 2. Bundesliga and transferred to Hannover 96 from. They were in the 1. Bundesliga for a spell in the 90s, so I'd consider them a relatively bigger club for the 3. Liga.

He hadn't started at Cottbus in 7 or 8 matches so I see this as a positive move, especially from a CMNT perspective. It's a level lower, but at least he'll likely be playing a lot more.

Hey well if JBB, Occean and Ledgerwood can play there and be selected.. why not?

OO was the league best player and is currently one of the best in the B2, he isn't a player I would use to determine the B3 level of play . Straith just needs playing time so this move might be a good thing for him despite the lower level.

It's a bit disapointing for him since 2 seasons ago he played 23 games in the B2 at a very young age and he hasn't been able to build on that. Let's hope this move can help him in some way.

I agree, 2 seasons ago he busted into the team. Now, this is a big moment for him to take a run of games and show he's still at that level and beyond.

Was Occean picked by Hart last season when he was at Offenbach? German magazine Kicker currently has him as their highest rated striker in the 2. Bundesliga. I would think that if his current club, Fürth, don't promote this season, which they may, he'll get some attention from 1. Bundesliga clubs.

I know that, my point was just that it's a level where other nats have played so if he can get regular time his chances look better.

Too bad he wasn't loaned out to a team in top flight Czech, Austria, Switzerland, or Poland. I don't like seeing our players in a third tier league (Even if the player is a fringe guy like Sraith). Oh well he will be playing and is still young. This will be better than sitting on the bench for Cottbus.

Much better than sitting on the bench. He's still very young and needs to play. He is one of the key guys I am sure we all expect to be a fairly regular CMNT call-up for the RB role - either as a starter or back-up in the future. Pending the emergence of a guy younger than him. As right now it is pretty much Hainault or Edgars spot.

The good teams in those leagues are mostly better or similar in level to the 2nd BL so he may not get regular playing time there either. The weaker teams where he would start are playing against relegation, not really the best situation to put a young developing player in. Plus, it is better for him to be playing in the better football nation where it is easier to move up and easier for both Cottbus to follow him and him to catch the eye of another 2nd BL team. Also Saarbrucken is in the promotion race and may be in 2 BL next year themselves and could make the deal permanent if they like him.

Straith needs to stay in Germany and go somewhere where he can play a lot of games so he can either return to Cottbus next year stronger and more prepared to compete for playing time or transfer to somewhere where there is more opportunity for him to start. Cottbus is having a poor season because they can not score but they have one of the strongest group of defenders in 2 BL so it is not the ideal place for him at the moment and may or may not be next year depending on who transfers in or out. I would not want to see him become a career 3rd division player like Ledgerwood and JBB appear to be doing but I think Straith is also a better player than either of them. I think he can be a decent 2 BL starting defender but right now not at a club with strong defenders like Cottbus. He needs to play more to improve and either go back to Cottbus as a better player or find another 2nd BL club where the situation is better for him as a starter, either a promoted Saarbrucken or another 2 BL club with some holes in the back. This is a good move for him.

Since they chose to take Straith, and his salary, on loan 'til season's end, I'm optimistic that he'll get the opportunity right off the bat to compete for a starting spot. Time will tell, I guess, but I'm guessing both Straith, Cottbus, and Saarbruecken saw the move in the light of him getting more playing time.

I said the same thing when Rob Friend was loaned to E. Frankfurt but he hasn't played much since september.

That being said, you are probably correct as most loan moves are made with playing time in mind. What happened with Rob is the exception.

Unfortunately this likely means we won't be seeing Straith for the Olympic Q's.

Maybe as a clause in his move he had Saarbruecken agree to release him? Ahhh you're right, we're screwed there. Too bad too, Attakora and Straith as a CB combo would be just as good or better than Jakovic and Hainault in 2008.

I thought Rob Friend was sold outright from Hertha Berlin to E. Frankfurt?? In any case, your point that a loan move is no guarantee of playing time or a subsequent career upswing is well taken.

Speaking of Rob Friend, Frankfurt sold one of the strikers, Gekas, who was playing ahead of him, so that might end up providing more of an opportunity for him.
