Voyageurs New Face of Canadian Nationalism?

Noticed the following article about the Canadian national anthem and totally unrelated to soccer nevertheless had a picture of the Voyageurs as an example of proud Canadians. Might be from the Women Olympic's Qualification as Evil Bert looks to be in the picture. The author of the article is Steve Mertl who is a retired CP reporter who now freelances for Yahoo News. Not sure if he is a soccer fan or if he chose the picture but pretty cool that we have grown to prominence to such an extent that even an article with nothing to do with soccer features a picture of us.

To the mods: This might fit better subject wise in the Voyageurs sub-forum but I thought it was worth posting here in the forum most people read.

Here is a link to the article and the picture used is below: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/o-canada-ranks-low-sing-along-ability-ahead-213218721.html

We should seriously look at getting more MPs/visible figures in Canada to support our Canadian teams. Whether that is Harper showing up at a WCQ or getting someone who tweets about sports a lot like Denis Coderre or Tony Clement to tweet about us (us being the Voyageurs or national team) it may help raise the profile of the team a bit.

One can only hope that an increased profile for the events in recent weeks (the Walrus article) and days (the WOQs) will remain in place when the important WCQs are being hyped and played, and that it also translates into butts in seats.

Small quibble, but I prefer "patriotism" to "nationalism". Fewer bad associations.

Great article! this quote perticulary,

".....it’s worth noting that over the course of the twentieth century soccer has defined the local ethos. When it wasn’t retreading history by pitting France against Germany, or Bolivia against Spain, football was satirizing it: Argentina beating England with the Hand of God in ‘86, shortly after the Falklands War; or everyone thumping the Americans..."

I earlier refered to this in Roberts Rules; the Schardenfruder that was the FC Cup, pitting Liverpool against Manchester United so soon after the Racism row.
