Grizzly
He was and still would be my first choice for Impact head coach. http://nasl.com/index.php?id=3&newsid=1589 Some info on why he did not re-sign with Puerto Rico: http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2011/12/01/islanders-colin-clarke-to-be-named-new-carolina-railhawk-coach-next-week/
Opie
I think the Impact went in a better direction with a young coach in Marsch. Before this year, Colin Clarke got results, but seems to have alienated much of the PRI fanbase and put the Islanders in real trouble. His teams don't play the most attractive style either. Grizzly
If you have only watched his teams play in Champions League you might have the impression that they play unattractive football but they were one of the most attractive attacking style teams in the NASL, a league not exactly known for that style of play. One of his better attributes as a coach was his ability to employ different tactics successfully with his team both during games depending on the situation or tailoring them to the opposition. When playing teams from higher leagues he defended and played counter-attacking football and had a lot of success doing so. What are you talking about as far as him getting results before this year. The team finished in 2nd place 2 points behind Carolina and got screwed by the league in the playoffs by having to play against Fort Lauderdale while missing 7 or their best players on WCQ duty. He has been successful all 4 years at Puerto Rico. He also had a very good two and half year run as an MLS coach with FC Dallas. Marsch is an unknown quality who may or may not turn out to be successful so it is hard to compare him with Clarke but I would have and still would go with the guy who has proven his quality many times over. Clarke was the best coach in the NASL for the last several years including Rennie.

jedinathan
I have to agree. from what I saw PRI looked very mobile and inventive during their games against Edmonton. If by that you mean they invented new ways to waste time by dropping to the grass then I agree! Seriously I think he will get good results in Carolina the same way that he did in PRI. However as a fan of the Eddies I'm sure I' going to hate him just as much as I did this year.

Oh I imagine the dropping like a sack of spuds routine was there before Colin arrived. It was probably worse, but I could comment for certain. I imagineColins comments been, "ah what-at-cha we man. You've nay chance o scoring from off yer arse if sat on the B#$tard thing! Not git off it an gi me 20 push urps!"
Opie
Clarke was the best coach in the NASL for the last several years including Rennie. The NASL only played its first season this year. Last year they played in the USSF sanctioned D2 league with the USL. I assume you meant the USL-1? Many PRI fans complained about Clarke not connecting with the fanbase(he doesn't speak Spanish and attendance has dropped the past couple of years) and for not playing a more pleasing Latin style. So your issue is with them. The one time I saw PRI they seemed to play the typical boring NASL 'kick the ball and hope' style I saw from other teams. Nothing unique. You are not going to see many passes strung together in North American D2. It is what it is. Having results in D2 doesn't mean much for MLS. And FC Dallas fans have mixed opinions about Clarke. For all we know Rennie will flop, but I feel at least he will bring his eye for talent. Instead of recycling old dogs, MLS is moving towards younger and hopefully more offensive minded coaches. Guys like Jason Kreis and current American U-23 coach Caleb Porter are the future. Marsch fits into that mold.
VPjr
to compare Kreis to Marsch is a stretch. Kreis was an RSL legend and was always going to be given some leeway by their fans when he took over the coaching duties Marsch comes highly touted by people within USSF circles and he might end up being a great choice but I will be very surprised if Impact supporters are going to be very patient with a coach that has zero track record as a manager. He is going to need to have a decent first season (similar to how Portland did in its first year in MLS) to keep the fans happy. Rennie at least has a track record to point to if his team starts slowly. Clarke impressed me for his ability to get results. This is a results oriented business. I'm sure he will continue to produce those results for Railhawks. He may not always play beautiful soccer but at that level its not always easy to play an attractive style (hell, you don't see a lot of overly attractive football in MLS either).
