Soju
^That brings to mind a rant, so rant I shall. Chinese players get recognized as "talented" at age 5 and sent to live in national sports gulags. From there they learn nothing and practice sport all day. They graduate from said sports gulag barely able to speak their native language and are probably illiterate. Their trainers were all appointed based on relations and not any expertise; an old boys network of such proportions the CSA could only dream of. They then have a choice. Play in the Chinese Super League for a good living, eat familiar food and bang karaoke girls....or go to the scary place you know nothing about called simply "abroad" where people eat only hamburgers and everyone has guns. Few go. Most of these guys will stay in China their whole lives playing in an ultra ULTRA corrupt league where it seems every third match is blatantly fixed and every fourth match is proved so. They become big fat lazy fish in a small pond and as soon as they face any adversity, any team with any bottle like a Uzbekistan or Jordan, they wilt. Canada might stink, but at least all the players need to earn keep at their clubs rather than trading on their names. They know what it means to stay competitive and based on that alone, I'd pick Canada to win should the two ever meet.
amacpher
I'd pick Canada to win should the two ever meet. Well obviously. You have to be pretty crap to consistently not reach the final 10 teams in AFC qualifying. Why do they continue to take bets on Chinese football matches though if there is that much corruption? If people are so pathetic that they can't stop the urge to piss away their $50/month paycheques at casinos, there are still thousands of international football matches to bet on. Although Korea should be a shoe in, I'm a little nervous about a tricky tie against Kuwait. Ya, ya, they SHOULD win, but you know how nerves are in situations like this. hectorj
Minnows galore in the final round. I hope the Australians bring their "A" squad to their last game against the Saudis as the latter would be eliminated with a loss and either Oman or Thailand winning their last game against each other in Muscat. An Oman win and AUS-RSA tie would also eliminate the Saudis. I imagine the Aussies would rather not face the Saudis in the final round, so I imagine they will do so. CanadianSoccerFan
I've got a feeling the players from Singapore and Indonesia went home with an extra 20 grand in their pockets after the scorelines they put up today.
amacpher
The Singapore match isn't all that suspicious since it meant nothing anyway. But Indonesia's 10 goal loss?? Their biggest ever defeat, conveniently occurring on the last match-day when their opponents needed a 9-goal victory. Indonesia fielded their U-23 team in exchange for new training ground built with Bahrainian oil money, I suspect.
CanadianSoccerFan
The Singapore match isn't all that suspicious since it meant nothing anyway. It doesn't matter whether the game means something in a competitive sense because gamblers are the ones making the overwhelming majority of fixes. Meaningless friendlies get fixed all the time for betting profits. If a vastly inferior team has nothing to play for it makes a fix even more likely. True, but I imagine that it is easier and more attractive to bet on something like "Bahrain to qualify to the next round: 40/1" then "Iraq to win by 4+ goals: 2/1" Also I'm not sure what is suspicious about Singapore losing 7-1 on the road against the best team in the group(?) It's a bit lopsided, but nothing you don't see in the EPL or La Liga sometimes when top plays bottom. Singapore also lost 4-nil at home to China so this result doesn't totally stand-out by itself. Unlike 10-nil!

beachesl
Asian heavyweights drawn together March 9, 2012 Email Print By ESPNsoccernet staff Australia and Japan, the 2011 Asian Cup finalists, have been paired together for the final round of the continent's World Cup qualifying campaign. GettyImages Japan's name is picked out by AFC executive director Windsor John The Blue Samurai triumphed in Qatar last year, and will be favourites to top Group A ahead of the Socceroos, Iraq, Jordan and Oman. In Group B, South Korea stand out as the traditional powers, though Uzbekistan - who had the best record in the third round of qualifying - are expected to challenge hard for a first place at the finals. Lebanon, three-time World Cup qualifiers Iran and 2022 host Qatar make up the other contenders. The top two teams in each group will secure an automatic passage to the 2014 finals in Brazil, while the two third-placed teams will play each other for a spot in the AFC-CONMEBOL play-off - against the fifth-placed team in South American qualifying. Australia coach Holger Osieck believes his side have been drawn in the tougher of the two groups, but is confident he can mastermind the country's progress to a third straight World Cup finals. "It's going to be a tough group, particularly the road [away] games," Osieck said. "[but] we know what is at stake now and we know what we have to deliver. We have to be right there from the start, from minute one."
