I don't know if someone capped for the Senior mens can still play U23, but I hope so cuz TFC Academy grads like Stinson and Morgan, even Nana Attakora should be a lock. If not then that's too bad.

I'd like to guys like Stillo and Misiewicz in net. Russell Teibert, Kyle Porter, Paul Hamilton, Shaun Saiko, Doneil Henry, Joe Di Chiara, Ethan Gage and definitely REB. Wouldn't mind Eddy Sidra too but he's had a poor season from a confidence standpoint I think. Getting screwed around by TFC's interim management, then being released by FC Edmonton.

In past, i always said that Olympic qualifying was the toughest chore for canada. Even tougher than WCQ because:

1) only two teams from Concacaf qualify

2) we lack depth in the program meaning that its challlenge to find a sufficient quantity of players who are professional and in that age range.

3) shortage of domestic based professionals. Since this qualifying tourny falls outside the fifa calendar, the clubs are not obliged to release players.

But now, for the first time, there might be reason for hope. We finally have a more reasonable number of professionals in that age category who are domestic based playing in MLS or NASL. And who will not be impacted by club vs country because they will be in NA and in off season.

Fully agree. I was thinking of the Olympic Q's on the weekend and what our best lineup would be:

---------------Stillo---------------

Stinson?---Straith-Nana-----Morgan

-----------Saiko---Gage-----------

Lindsay?-------REB-----------Teibert

--------------Haber----------------

The only problems i see are getting Stillo, Straith and Haber released. Wait and see with REB also.

Backup GK's could be Adam Janssen of Long Island Univ., Misiewicz in Poland, JLL at Cottbus, Santiago at Cardiff or Simon Thomas at Huddersfield.

D i would add Henry from TFC and...whoever else, can't think much right now..Fresenga in Uruguay (if his injuries did make him play poorly) maybe Roger Thompson from the U20's...Sidra has fallen far, Paris is playing in HK ffs...

Mids...Matt Lam and Kyle Porter from FCE, Mozzie Gyorio of Tampa...Osorio from Nacional?

Forward - Pisanjuk in Hungary, Reda A. (or is he playing for Morocco?)...Jorge Vacani in Uruguay?

Looks like Senior Capped players can play (wasnt sure, thanks for confirming)

I like this lineup. Forgot about Haber and I agree Matt Lam is a good idea. I really like the look of what you have as a starting lineup. That'd be my pick too if all options are healthy and available. Love to see Di Chiara get bled into international footy a bit too.

We should have a stronger team than years past here's my stab at it:

--------------------Haber---------------------

Teibert---------------------------------Porter

-------------Lam--------Saiko----------------

------------------Di Chiara-------------------

Morgan-----Attakora----Straith-----Stinson

------------------Misciewcz---------------------

Others to consider are Gage, Saler, Lindsay, Sidra, Owusu-Ansah, Edwini Bonsu, Henry, Cordon, Janniere, Welshman, Bekker, Sodade, Onargo, Stillo, Santiago, Bassi, Fisk, Agourram, Ilcu, Vukovic, Aleman, Alderson...

I hope we really know our NCAA kids this time around.. in the U20 qualifying tourney I thought there could have been better decisions made for sure.

The more we have to rely college players and players who are too young (like U17 players or others in the 17-19 age group) the more doomed we are in Olympic qualifying. Same could be said for the un proven overseas players. These three factors was our problem in the past. The americans and the mexicans went with young professionals who were playing or breaking in to MLS or similar. This is tournament for young professionals (ie.20-22 year olds), not amateurs.

We finally have a squad we can build with primarily professionals, why add college players and underagers who are not as far along the development curve? Unless they are a cant miss talent.

Thats how i'll judge our prospects. If i see a squad like:

----------Stillo/Monsalve---------------

Henry---Straith-Nana-----Morgan

-----------Saiko---Stinson-----------

Lindsay?-------REB/Derosario*-----------Teibert

--------------Haber/Porter----------------

* you are permited one player over the age of 23 on the roster

Then we have chance. If there are too many college players and/or players like Alderson (17 yrs old) then forget about it.

Does playing in Olympic qualifying "cap-tie" you? If not then an invitation could be extended to Junior Hoilett. He could get a chance to play for Canada without committing himself. + Jamaica is not in the tournament. (I know this scenario is highly unlikely.)

Olympic qualifying does not cap tie you. In fact, JDG junior player for Holland at the Olympics and he is not yet cap tied to Holland.

Monsalve is an 88' and thus does not qualify.

Also, over age players are not allowed until the actual Olympic tournament, unless this rule has changed.

Forgot about JDC, he's competing with Saiko and Gage (Stinson?) for one of the D-mid spots...also Kyle Bekker has to be competing for one of the three attacking mid slots...

First i've heard of overage players being used for Q's, any links for that?

edit: forgot about Bobby Kajgo as well, playing in the Bosnian Premier League...though he might not want to play for us...

El-Masri....?? he just got cut by the Whitecaps why would he warrant a call-up???

JDC is in the squad. Full stop. I realize he'd have comp for a first XI spot....basically he and Gage are playing very similar levels and roles, but Gage has been around longer....

In that case better scratch off Edwini-Bonsu, Rago and Porter who were all deemed surplus by the Caps. I have never seen him play but I don't think there are a ton of guys that are ahead of him.

This is the type of situation where pros have to be used. ie - Lam, Saiko, Porter etc rather than NCAA's and lower league Eastern European league players. If I don't see some FCE players on the roster I will flip. Also, please no Gazzola anywhere near this team. Thanks.

No doubt but also consider that some of these players in NCAA may be better than the pros.. just look at some of the players who've come out of the NCAA yearly. Imagine for instance last time around we ignored Dejan Jakovic.. (who was playing at UAB at the time, same team as Soldade is now). Emery Welshman is being heralded as the next great striker to come out of Oregon.. in recent years Robbie Findley, Danny Mwanga and TFC's own Ryan Johnson have come out of the school. Another striker to consider is former TFC Academy product Allando Matheson who as a freshman is starting striker for #1 ranked Connecticut. With guys like Ilcu, Agourram, Semenents, Vukovic and Lindsay there will be some serious competition for spots.. especially if Haber and Edwini-Bonsu are available.

I expect to see a few NCAA guys on the team.. some such as Kyle Bekker may actually be drafted to MLS by that time. I would definitely like to see the number of NCAA guys cut down from previous years (and even camps up to this) though as we've seen some of them not go anywhere.

Guest Brethers

REB is a def if he's not trialling. Haber would be good but I want him to nail a first team spot with super Js. I reckon Janeil hoilett may be a good shout with saiko and joey d. Would like to see alderson and gasperotto to show them we want them. Gasperotto inclusion may help aird choose canada too (if he can switch back). GKs would like 3 of stillo, JLL, Crepeau, Roberts, Santiago and Thomas

Edit: Piette may be worth a look or just could be called for the experience. He's good plus versatile

^ Forgot about Matheson too!

No overaged players allowed in the Q's. As usual 3 overaged players allowed in the Olympics proper:

http://www.concacaf.com/staticFiles/fc/65/0,,12813~157180,00.pdf

Page 15 General Provisions

Men’s Tournament

3. All players participating in the preliminary and final competitions of the

Tournament shall be born on or after 1 January 1989. However, a maximum of

three male players who do not meet this age limit may also be included in the

official list of players for the final competition.

edit: That's the second mention of Gasparotto for the U23's. Let's not lose sight of the fact that the kid is only 16 ('95) and was not even the best CB on the U17's - that was Stanese. I have Henry, Murrell and Stanese ahead of him on the CB depth chart for the next U20's as well. He should not be anywhere near this U23 squad IMO.

REB, Rago, and Porter all actually played games for the Whitecaps though. Elmasri never got off trialist status....
