Introducing the Canadian Premier Futsal League

Thought you guys may like to know what has been in the works for a while regarding a unique and groundbreaking semi-pro futsal league. At a meeting last night in Toronto, 6 principal teams have decided to band together to form what is the country's first multi-regional competitive mens futsal league. The name of the league will be the Canadian Premier Futsal League. We hope you like you what you read and that you support the project.

Although the league is aiming to hit 8 professional partner organizations for its inaugural start, here are the original 6 teams that will launch in late November:

- Mississauga Eagles (The same group behind the CSL team). Home Venues: Hershey Centre & U of T 'Sauga

- Real Toronto (Elite players from OSL, SC Toronto and York Region Shooters) Home Venue: Seneca College Newnham

- London Futsal Club (Made up of elite players from the London region) Home Venue: TBD

- Barrie Futsal Club (Made up of elite players from the Barre region) Home Venue: Georgian College

- Brampton United (The same group behind the CSL) Home Venue: TBD

- Toronto Boca Juniors (2x defending OSA Champions with players from Toronto Celtic and GS United) Home Venue: Seneca College Newnham

Essentially, there will be a 14 game season with a home and away play structure (15 if the league moves ahead with 6) followed by a playoff championship.

Some matches will be televised on either Rogers TV or OMNI TV and Brazilian sports brand, Penalty, has come aboard as the league's official ball sponsor. What is great about that is they sponsor only 3 futsal leagues in the world: The Brazilian Futsal League, the Spanish Futsal League, and now the Canadian league.

With futsal still being relatively unknown in many Canadian soccer circles, the CPFL wanted to start small and simple and to make sure that some professional standards were established as opposed to merely accepting whoever wanted in - and believe me there are a few of groups that wanted in but couldn't make the cut. Naturally, a regional Southern Ontario league needs to grow into multiple divisions in different provinces in order to truly be called a 'Canadian League' and there are plans already under way to launch a lower-mainland BC division next year and with some extra effort, in Quebec as well.

Both, the CONCACAF Futsal Championships and FIFA Futsal World Cup are literally about a year away and one primary purpose of the league was to give our elite players the chance to get to that tournament and the Canadian talent is in abundance so it is very possible to make it. On the long-term it is hoped that this first major step will start what is hoped to be a legacy project for the sport of futsal here and to give youth players the chance to have another playing opportunity in addition to representing the Canadian badge at the international level.

Good news. I'm surprised it took so long for a league like this to emerge. Futsal may be relatively unknown but its core niche following is solid enough that this sort of venture should be viable. Rosters are small and gym rentals are usually not too drastic so costs can be kept under control. Not sure about the advisability of the name and national aspirations but won't go there on this thread because I understand the entry into CONCACAF competition angle. :)

this is great, sorry for thinking about this from an outdoor perspective but hopefully a few more outdoor clubs join, it'll give some of our guys an bonus small contract and a chance to keep playing at a high level in winter. I know it's not the same but I've found indoor soccer really helps with tighter ball control and quicker reflexes (like successfully frantic old Ronaldhino ****) and oddly enough I've always found it built up my stamina (it's a faster paced game that keeps you running hard even when the ball's on an opposite flank, I love playing central midfield so I always loved playing it, how long is an official match though?).

And of course it's bound to help our futsal program (sorry I'm so single minded. BTW off topic, I've always felt bad for neglecting to make a video for the women's team because of my narrow minded focus, If anyone wants to recommend a game, PM me and I'll get it done eventually, ohh and Futsal, if you want, I'm always willing to make a token video or two for free and it's perfectly legal if I'm doing it with the approval of a league and use songs that want to be on youtube, pm me if you want, which reminds me...I'm like 40% done the V-cup...)

Hi all, thanks for the all the kind words, we really appreciate it. We're working real hard to get this set off right and the website will come soon although for now www.futsalcanada.ca is where it's at for futsal info including the league.

The league will be sanctioned in Ontario for now and there is no reason to involve the CSA at this particular stage considering it is Ontario-based. Literally 95% of all registered and unregistered futsal players, coaches and referees reside in Ontario so it only makes sense.

We truly believe that this will be the best opportunity for elite futsal players to get to the national team which is in the midst of holding ID camps (the people behind this league held the Ontario camp on behalf of the OSA about a month ago). Ontario suffered a bit at their ID camp as 70% of the top players weren't able get released from their soccer clubs to try out so the CPFL is going to provide the outlet to get noticed.

Juby, you can come and shoot anytime you'd like. If you are relatively close to Esther Shiner Stadium - judging by the Astros logo - then you know how close Seneca College Newnham Campus is and we'll be there for Toronto based teams. In regards to soccer clubs joining, there is a world of difference between elite soccer players and futsal players, most soccer players can't make the cut as we have played with a dozen or so guys from TFC and the Canadian national soccer team over the last 5 years. So the talent signings for teams will focus on using the creme de la creme of futsal talent although quite a few OSL and CSL standouts will be in the league.

Ohhh sorry, theirs a bit of confusion, I don't actually film the games myself, I take full length already recorded games and edit them down to a highlight package of a few minutes(generally their a lot more fun then the simpler goals/shots/saves highlights).

Their pretty useful because it allows a lot of our clubs to give a good impression of themselves on the internet despite a lack of strong internet marketing from many of them, it used to be if you typed in 'Canadian soccer' you'd get a video called 'why doesn't anyone cheer for Canadian soccer?' which makes us look undesirable to join as a group (it makes us sound like losers), but at least now that we have more video's and people helping out, someone who decides type in a search for anything 'canadian soccer' will find a couple hours of fun internet diversions showing our guys playing really well instead of search results being mostly nothing or worse. So like I said, I can make a token video no problem just to help your leagues rep and visability.

Not sure that really contradicts what futsal posted given GS United are not one of the six clubs listed as being founder members. All that is said is that players from GS United will play for the Boca Juniors team. A futsal team roster is significantly smaller than a conventional outdoor soccer one so think what you describe could easily happen.

It has taken a long time but we finally launch the CPFL this Saturday and for any Voyageurs that want to come out, it is free and so is parking. There are a couple of Canadian National Team Players playing in the games so come and see the present and future of out sport.

Everyone is invited to the launch of the new Canadian Premier Futsal League that we're launching this Saturday night at Seneca College Newnham Campus (DVP/404-401) starting at 6:30pm and a 2nd game at 8pm. It is free and so is parking (Lot 5 only). There two CSL teams in this double-header for those that follow that league.

The Canadian Premier Futsal League (CPFL) features 7 teams from Southern Ontario, including some Canadian National Team Players. Futsal is FIFA's only official type of indoor soccer and has its own FIFA World Cup, UEFA and CONCACAF Championship, and will be a gold-medal sport at the 2015 Pan American games in Toronto.

If you're in the GTA come on out for a couple of hours by yourself, with the boys, or the family, again, it's all free this Saturday. Believe me when I say this game is an amazing spectator sport. Supporters culture is very much encouraged so bring the noise if you're coming.

SAT JAN 14th @ Seneca College Newnham Campus

6:40pm: Toronto Boca Juniors vs Brampton City United

8pm: York Region Shooters vs Barrie Futsal Club

Hope to see a familiar face or two there.

Also, a big thanks to all involved in organizing this! I KNOW how much work something like this is and it is purely a labor of love! Tons o' respect!

I think Canadians would likely take to Futsal quite well, it is indoors (bonus for a place we have to be covered at least 4 months a year) fast like hockey and higher scoring, also easier to understand than football because it is more 'on the fly' than football where if you don't know how to spot a play developing it just looks like guys running around.

Let's hope this works out and we see a Canadian team at the Futsal world cup!

Thanks for a good time tonight, only got to see the first game but good fun (even of reffing was terrible at times), now we need beer served...

Think I was the only one cheering for TO there, LOTS of dirty looks but like I have told MANY people, I will never go against my city/country.

Hey boys,

The 2012 CPFL Championship is taking place this Sunday April 22nd at 4:45pm at Seneca College Newham Campus and will be the most intense futsal match on Canadian soil of the season.

#1 ranked Brampton City United and will face their bitter rivals the #2 ranked Toronto Boca Juniors in what is sure to be an epic clash between two of Canada's elite futsal clubs. If you have never been to a live futsal match this is definitely the one you want to make your first. With futsal now being a gold medal sport at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto here is your chance to see some Canadian national team players that will be attempting to qualify for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.

Parking is free (in Lot 5 only) and admission is a solitary $1 which will go entirely to fund youth players that cannot afford to play, So bring your friends and the family out for a fantastic sporting event. But come early as we will capping attendance at 500. Also make sure to stay hungry as their will be great food and drinks for sale including the legendary Spanish chicken sandwiches that have been a staple of the Ontario futsal scene for 2 decades.

Look forward to hosting you.
