JDG2 interview

This is a recent interview discussing the move to Villarreal, but also they briefly touch on his national aspirations around minute 15. Interesting that he does not have regular contact with the Dutch National team coach, and expects to only hear from him when he is called up. However, when asked if he has given Canada, Jamaica, or Philippians any thought, he says "not really". Not a surprise that he is still focused on Holland, but he does acknowledge that there are alot of players to choose from. He also sounds genuinely happy that soccer in Canada is getting more exposure. I don't know, although it is bad for us, it is hard to hate on a guy who is doing what is best for him. And who knows, maybe he will never get a cap with Holland, and choose to play for Canada when he is 30 or something (a la Jermaine Jones and the US), but he is not playing with us anytime soon in my opinion. Also, no mention of him giving up his passport.

Interesting read but I think the world soccer subforum might have been the appropriate place for this? Think he made a mistake that he will regret later in life by choosing Holland over Canada (he'll be quickly forgotten in Europe after a so so career but could have been a legendary type figure in a Canadian context which would probably translate into jobs within the sport pretty much for life) but he had the right to make it and players are gained as well as lost based on FIFA's lax set of eligibility regulations.

Wow, just realized that this was in the wrong section, totally meant to post this in the world soccer subform. That is what happens when you make a late night post.

Yeah, I also feel that it would have been better for his career if he had chosen to play with Canada. But then again, if he does break into the Dutch Squad this year, preforms well, and retains his spot, he could end up with 20 or 30 caps with them when it is all said and done. I use to be a firm believer that he would only get 7 or 8 caps with them, but I feel less strongly about that now a days. Look at De Rossi he has 25 or 30 caps with Italy as one of Villarreal's stars, and I really don't think it is beyond De Guzman to become one of their key players moving forward.

PS: mods feel free to move this thread
