PJSweet
Do you guys remember the Calgary Boomers. The team remained in the NASL for 1 year (1981). What's funny here is on that very year they made the play-offs, and then folded.
tmcmurph
I got to Calgary in 1980 and remember that they brought in a German or two who could kill a ball (and defender in the wall). They beat the Whitecaps in one game that I remember. I don't remember the indoor season part, just the outdoor.
PJSweet
Why did they named themselves the BOOMERS???? What do they mean by Boomers??? Does the name holds any significance to the city of Calgary??? What's also sad is that the team made the playoffs that very year of their inception into the NASL, and then the ownership folded the team. Why???????????????? shermanator
I wish Calgary had an NASL team now. Would definitely buy season tickets, and I know a few who would join me in doing so.

Does the name holds any significance to the city of Calgary??? I'm guessing some reference to the oil boom?? or the ownership was anticipating they would go Boom and then Bust? The league dropped from 21 to 14 teams the next year.. it wasn't just Calgary. The entire league had become unsustainable. I saw a documentary abou tthe NASL a few years ago.. think it focused on the Cosmos, that provied a good synopsis of why the league imploded.. its a shame. Agree it would be good for the league and for Edmonton if there was a geographic rival that also eased some travel costs. Any thoughts on where they would play? I don't think the league model would support games in McMahon, but that might be better than where FCE is stuck playing...

They were more German than Edmonton was dutch. I remember meeting Gerd Zimmerman. I went to maybe 10-12 games as a kid. I lived in Edmonton but we have family down there and I'd get to the games if I could. They never had a lot of fan support. I'd love for Calgary to have a team... Mind you, some of our best players are from cowtown, I'd hate to lose any one of them. I'm sure one of the biggest stumbling blocks would be where to play? As bad as Foote is for FCE, McMahon is far worse, sadly. I remember making road trips for the Aviator games and that field is not fit for soccer at all. It fits about 30,000 and I remember seeing sometimes less than 200 people(Mustang Fans?) in the stands. But it was the pitch that is just brutal. Calgary would have to build something. I thought they had a great start with the PDL Storm... Maybe if we can make a success of it up here in the chuck, they can find the will down south. L.T.
#3 (Top left) is my uncle. His son now plays hockey for Cornell and is a Pittsburgh Penguins Draft pick. I guess they got all the athletic genes in my family!

Currently, there are no places for an NASL team to play. Foothills Track was where the Storm started, but IIRC there's only about 2000 seats. McMahon would be a disaster for the environment.
