I know we do not consider Jono de Guzman a Canadian.. but there is still that slight glimmer of hope. Anyway, seems like he is close to signing with Spanish giant Villarreal.

Not if he's signing with Villarreal. He scored 4 goals down the stretch last season as Mallorca was collapsing, pretty much trying to single handedly keep them from relegation. If this move happens it's just a matter of time before he has a hot stretch and gets called to the Dutch NT.

If it was just a matter of the clubs he was playing for JDG2 would have been called up long ago.

Of course not, but it's a function of his development. His play was up and down for the first 2/3rds of the season last year and then he started getting it and his play took off. If this move happens it confirms that his growth has hit a new phase. Plus he'll have a better platform to make his case from, better players to play with, more offensive oriented game plans and European competition.

This is all moot anyways, Jono wouldn't slum it with us even if his life depended on it.

Frustrating results from England for Canucks - I can't even bring myself to update the results - I figure it's going to be an even more disappointing year there for our boys than last. Blah.

I'll sum it up: everyone in the Championship either sat on the bench or didn't make the squad. Peters, Edgar and Gage.

In League 1, Hume went the 90 for Preston as it lost 4-2 to Colchester. 1 yellowcard.

- Issey Nakajima-Farran also managed to not get off the bench for Horsens in their 3-3 draw at home to Aalborg.

- Jonke came in as a late sub (83') in Inter Turku's 2-0 win over Jaro in Finland

- Haber's St. Johnstone tie with Hibs was postponed, oddly enough, so that Hibernian could play Sunderland in a friendly. As one Hibs supporter mentioned on a forum, "Who ever arranged this game needs to have a word with themself, Simple, Hibs should be playing St Johnstone today and not some crappy friendly."

- Imhof played 90 in St. Gallen's 1-0 win over Winterthur in the Swiss Challenge League

- Norwich beat Parma 3-0 in a friendly. Jackson started and was subbed off on min 51: "Lambert put his faith in the strike force that helped secure their promotion last season with Simeon Jackson restored to the starting line-up alongside skipper Holt.

The pair linked up well in the first period and their understanding almost saw City get their noses in front in the 13th minute but Holt’s snapshot was blocked after the Canadian’s smart lay-off.

For all the Canaries’ sharp passing football it was a long ball over the top that should have seen them go in front. Jackson gave chase to Elliott Bennett’s long punt forward and the striker capitalised on some hesitation in the Italians’ defence to steal the ball from former Liverpool centre half Gabriel Paletta.

Jackson then almost had too much time to pick his spot in a one-on-one situation with Mirante and the shotstopper saved well with his feet."

- Sivasspor beat RAD 4-1 in a friendly that might have been arranged around Borjan's transfer (??). Milan played the first half and the only RAD goal was scored in the second against second keeper Atilla

- McCallum scored the second Lincoln goal in a seven-goal thriller of a friendly win over Boston United. The final scoreline was 4-3 to Lincoln: "Tom Ward failed to clear Nutter’s cross, which allowed McCALLUM to slam the loose ball past a clearly livid Bastock."

- Hirschfeld and his Valerenga drew Sogndal 1-1. Val. are 12th in the Norwegian Tippeligaen

- Trafford played 90, no sign of Bellisomo as Mariehamn were beaten 1-0 by Chencinski and his VPS.

- O'Neill started for MyPA and came out in the 66th min as they were held to a scoreless draw by TPS.

- Pacheco sat out with a knee injury as Santa Clara drew Arouca 1-1 in the first round of the Portuguese League Cup: http://www.abola.pt/nnh/ver.aspx?id=279959

- Hutchinson-less PSV lost 3-1 to AZ Alkmaar (BTW why are there 19 teams in the Eredivisie? Strangely odd number)

This is a bit worrying as wasn't it Jackson who missed a similar one-on-one in the gold cup? We seriously need a striker to actually be able to finish in these kinds of situations.

Sweden div 1 North (tier3)

Vladimir Vukovic seems to be a staple of Boden BK's starting XI, but is often chosen to be subbed out late in matches. Yesterday, Vlad was subbed after 86 mins in a solid 2-2 come-from-behind tie against fellow basement dwellers Valstra Syrianska (Märsta/Stockholm).

- Hirschfeld is ranked 13th overall in the player rankings in Norway at the moment. I had mistakenly thought that a 5.44 average (out of ten, I believe) was pretty poor, but in fact they are quite strict evaluations like we have seen with Kicker (??) in Germany. Pozniak by contrast is a 4.33 overall, scoring a measly 3/10 the other day when his defense shut out Sogndal and he even managed to score, so go figure:

Lars Hirschfeld has been okay for VIF but not spectacular. And according to the rankings, he would be the 3rd best keeper in Norway behind Rosenborg's Örlund and Molde's Pettersen which is about correct; although I think the Aalesund keeper Grytebust is on a par with Lars. I think he is still an upgrade from Troy Perkins who preceded Lars; and that's not a biased Canadian opinion either.

As for Pozniak, I think he doesn't get rated well because he's prone to be out of position when the opposition scores. Also playing in defense for a very unfancied Haugesund doesn't help.

Yep against Panama in the first 10 minutes I think he had a pretty glorious chance that he should have buried. Blasted it high and wide from distance...
