lamptern
Ok, now groups are drown and we could talk about groups of death/weak/rivals. Tough Groups: African Zone Group G: Egypt, Guinea, Zimbabwe, Comoros or Mozambique Egypt may lose another chance to qualify if they could not defeat the mighty Guinean. Asian Zone Group C: Japan, Uzbekistan, Syria, Korea DPR Everybody here has a dream. But maybe a nightmare after. European Zone Group B: Italy, Denmark, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Armenia, Malta. Group C: Germany, Sweden, Republic of Ireland, Austria, Faroe Islands, Kazakhstan. Two even strength groups which we could not see early results. Walkover: Group A: South Africa, Botswana, Central African Republic, Somalia or Ethiopia Weak: Group E: Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Albania, Cyprus, Iceland. This is a joke. Debate needed? Group of Death&Rivals: Group A: Croatia, Serbia, Belgium, Scotland, Macedonia, Wales No,it isn't Spain and France. Because it is pretty sure one of they will grab a playoff bye. But in Group A we will see 5 contenders fight for the top spot, and the runner up would suffer the lowest point among 9 groups.
DJT
Since all the responses in this thread were about Canada, I moved all of them to the previously-existing thread in the CMNT forum about that topic. I think lamptern meant the current thread to be about qualifying around the world, not Canada -- and even if that's not what he meant, that's what it is now. Therefore I've moved this thread to the World Soccer forum.

Loud Mouth Soup
It was nice of the Brazilian people to elect Lunchlady Doris from The Simpsons as their President.
DJT
European Group of Death: Spain, France, Switzerland, Romania, Finland, Wales Well, the Spain-France part happened! The actual UEFA Group of Death -- but also the Group of Life because it's balanced and every team has a realistic chance of at least doing well: Croatia, Serbia, Belgium, Scotland, Macedonia, Wales (plus there's two local derbies)

Derbies all over the board there.

Unnamed Trialist
European Group of Death: Spain, France, Switzerland, Romania, Finland, Wales If it is a very difficult group for the World champ, which it is, then it is a very difficult group for everyone. Problem too is that there will likely not be any best second coming out of this bunch as they are all going to lose points as far as I see it. Unnamed Trialist
European Group of Death: Spain, France, Switzerland, Romania, Finland, Wales Serves me right for believing a post on this forum, totally wrong. The group happens to be Group I: Spain France Belarus Georgia Finland But nice little group you made up there, very creative. Or was it a prediction? CanadianSoccerFan
In Europe, the group of life is Group E. Weak, yet remarkably even. If there was ever a hope in hell for teams like Cyprus or Iceland this is as close as it gets. Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Albania, Cyprus, Iceland
McGuire
I'm feeling really good about Ireland's chance to get to at least the playoffs. Aside from Germany, their competition is quite manageable, Sweden & Austria & 1 of the mnnows forget which one
Unnamed Trialist
A group of death has to always be a group where a team normally deserving to have a good chance to qualify faces opposition that could reasonably leave them high and dry. Death is only meaningful for those with a life in football, which are the powerhouses. The rest are already dead and qualification would be like an elixir of life. The way we'd feel about things if we were to qualify. In this sense I don't think any of the groups mentioned are really G of D.

There is no "playoff bye" in UEFA qualifying. Even the best 2nd-place finisher has to go to a playoff. That's why I think this (ie Group "I") is the group of death. I would normally pick a group that has more balance in it but no getting away from the fact that there is now a guarantee that a legitimate candidate to lift the 2014 World Cup in Rio will have to qualify through a playoff. Can't say that about any other group.
