Whitecaps FC will make a major player announcement 9:30 a.m. PT tomorrow morning (July 12).

Well, thanks for the heads up. You got me all warm inside, though if it's OH we might just see that fold away stadium torn down.

I want Eidur Gudjohnsen, he's is the absolute perfect fit, keep those Icelandic flags flying.

Seriously though, anyone but Greaves, ANYONE.

Weber has re-tweeted that it's possibly a DP who captains his national team, but didn't have anything to confirm either way. He also says it's likely a forward.

Interesting from @ColinUdoh RT "African DP press conference is 9am 2moro on Western Conference. Captains his national team."

If it's not a forward, could it be Joseph Yobo?

...and I'll throw Aaron Mokoena's name into the pot just for fun.

...and while we're dreaming, there aren't many African captains that are forwards as well and who would be classified as DP material - but Drogba and Eto'o fit the bill ;>

Is a defender and especially a centre back what they really need for DP? I think they are pretty set in the back other than needing to upgrade Leathers but I wouldn't go DP for the left back either. What they need is a really high quality midfielder with some offensive ability.

They have conceded lots of goals though. So it could be a keeper. Philly's DP is a GK.

Or a Canadian.

Both keepers are pretty mediocre but that is still not where I would spend DP money. I think a good two way midfielder would do more for their goals against than a big money defensive player or keeper. Even an offensive midfielder or another dangerous striker would probably help their goals against, more offensive threat will make opposing teams be more careful on attack. They need both a keeper and left back upgrade but that is not their most urgent need nor where they should be spending the big money.

Gudjohnsen fits the bill, he's a free agent, whos played on some of the biggest teams in the world, not to mention the Spurs when Barber was there. Is an Attacking Mid that would vastly improve us going forward. Only 32 and leads his home country of Iceland in most goals.

Years Team Apps† (Gls)†

1995 Valur Reykjavík 17 (7)

1995–1997 PSV 13 (3)

1998 KR Reykjavík 6 (0)

2000–2006 Chelsea 196 (54)

2006–2009 Barcelona 109 (19)

2009–2010 Monaco 9 (0)

2010 → Tottenham Hotspur (loan) 11 (2)

2010–2011 Stoke City 4 (0)

^ Gudjohnson would indeed fit the bill. My only worry about him is that his play has declined somewhat the last two years albeit at the EPL level not MLS level. May still have enough to be a dominant MLS player but hopefully if he is signed he will be signed to a contract level equivalent to a top MLS player not a top EPL player.

The scary part about all this is that the unmentionable one would indeed address a serious need for the Whitecaps. Btw did caps season ticket holders get a survey about two weeks ago by email about their opinions on MLS, relative quality of league, leagues they follow and loyalty and following of Canada and National teams..etc?

Just as long as Boxall isn't playing. That guy reminds me of a house league player.

Well, supposedly the "unmentionable one" is actually training in Canada, according to TSN: http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/story/?id=371546. Apparently those youtube videos were shot in North Vancouver.

Interesting that this news surfaces on the eve of a "major player announcement". Please correct me if this was already known and TSN is just late in reporting it..

Hmmmm knowing that, id say that those are the best odds.

Just when you think that you have been slapped in face as a Canada supporter enough times already by this guy, this would again top everything. First, commits to Canada, then used his British ties to spurn Canada who need him more than England. Now that its convenient for his profession to be Canadian, he is Canadian again. Meanwhile he has done nothing for Canada nor given anything to Canada, its all been about take take take.

it would be further despicable if he were to sign with Vancouver, he gets accepted by fans as if nothing happens and decision to bail on Canada gets somehow justified and then when world cup qualifying come around the corner, the CSA plays most of its games or the quality opponent in Vancouver under the pretext, that the support for Canada is stronger.

The only thing I would question there is that Canada needed him more than England did. The way England plays, I would suggest that they needed him just as much.

Ouch, hopefully for the Caps that's not the case:

"After some great seasons for the danish team, he was accused for his laziness on the field, and he looked like a man that wasn't interested in playing in the danish league anymore."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Utaka

Well he still scored almost a goal every second game last year so I think that comment might be taken with a grain of salt like much of Wikipedia. He was also 3rd highest scorer in the Danish Superliga last year. I think he would be a good signing for the Caps but I doubt it is going to happen. He is still under contract with OB and if his transfer fee is scaring away FC Koeln, I doubt MLS is going to pony up the fee. http://indepthafrica.com/nigeria/sports/peter-utaka-misses-cologne-deal/

Not so worried about his production, but his mindset. He's obviously looking for greener fields so a move to MLS would not be ideal (the guy would probably stagnate). And as you pointed out (and so did Wiki) he's looking to move to Germany - which is probably where he belongs in terms of relative quality.

A little off the board with this one, but it looks to be Mustapha Jarju from RAEC Mons in Belgium 2. He's been playing as a striker at club level, but plays in the midfield for The Gambia. Did in fact captain the U-17s according to wiki, and scored 20ish goals (21) according to transfermarket.

Very ballsy signing in my view that is indicative of a serious football move that has nothing to do with marketing. Could be a disaster, but if this guy is able to contribute goals from the midfield and use his stature to help retain a little possession and link play, we could really be on to something here. Positionally, it's not the ideal signing, but we still have a 3rd DP -and there are rumours that Hassli and Chiumiento have become disillusioned with the club.

EDIT: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/mustapha-alasan-jarju/profil/spieler_42399.html
