nolando
This sucks - remember when this was the best thing to ever happen to Canadian soccer? More like the best thing to ever happen to recent American college graduates, and for the league in general. I know, I know...there's the academies, and the exposure..but still...I never really imagined it quite like this.

TheKottonmouthed1555362307
How many Canadians in each team's academy program? Well the Caps PDL team is all Canadian eligible with only like 5 or 6 with dual citizenship. Though thats just according to the Whitecaps website. Grizzly
The worst thing is they have hardly any Canadians but both teams still really suck and actually look like they belong in NASL more than MLS.
Richard
So how do the MLS clubs attract those Canadians playing in other leagues, especially in Europe? Don't need to have the problem pointed out, only interested in practical solutions.
Ivan
Keep in mind, probably 3 Canadians that generally start for TFC are hurt. Hainault did start for Houston, and looked really good. Took the captain's armband when Ching was substituted. Keeper Tally Hall said after the game that Hainault has been the rock of the Dynamo defense all season. canucker
Very discouraging but hopefully things change over the next few years with the academy players, especially for the Whitecaps with only 3 Canadian players on the roster. Has Teibert lost his spot? He doesn't seem to be injured but wasn't on the bench the past 2 games. I thought he was one of the Caps most promising players this season and seems to be the only player aside from Rochat who could get a decent cross in. At least Hainault and Johnson had very good games for their respective teams.

tmcmurph
Technically Rochat is Canadian for MLS purposes. On another note Dero scored the only goal against his old team giving DC an unexpected 1-0 win over NYRB. You know, the team that beat TFC 5-0 .... again. Plus great to hear DeRo bagged one in a 1-0 win over the Energy Drinks
shawn_strat
I have to say I am very worried. With Toronto and Vancouver near the bottom of the table, and Montreal surely set to join them there next year, we are looking pathetic in the U.S. MLS. I was very optimistic about Montreal joining the league, but their pathetic performances this year have dampened my enthusiasm.

BringBackTheBlizzard
Frei has done the right thing. He has stated that he regards himself as Swiss first and foremost and is only interested in playing for Switzerland on that basis. That's what playing for a national team should be about. Waiting for the country you identify with most strongly to decide whether or not they want to select you.

The Caps were the ones mainly pushing for having no Canadians on the roster and they still aren't doing well. Granted, they have been really unlucky at times and could've gotten results out of most of their losses. They need Chiamiento and Tiebert back. The problem for Montreal will be to find Canadian talent who is available and who can play in MLS.

The Caps finished off last season strongly with people optomistic about guys like Rochat, Davide and Dunfield. Montreal tanking it this season just takes the pressure off them. They may be able to quietly come into MLS and put in a strong first year because of that. I think Bernier and Occean are realistic signings for the Impact next year. Edgar on loan maybe? Is JBB unattached right now?
Free kick
I really hope Frei opts for Canada down the road, he would be money between the pipes for us. ks I mentioned this at the pub last night during the MLS game. Sure, he might be committed to Switzerland but at that position the Swiss have real depth. Not only are they one of the stingiest teams in the world at allowing goals, they also have several keepers at home in and in the Bundesliga. Gordon
It's kind of amusing. The Caps were the ones mainly pushing for having no Canadians on the roster and they still aren't doing well. Granted, they have been really unlucky at times and could've gotten results out of most of their losses. They need Chiamiento and Tiebert back. I've seen this stated by a number of Toronto area posters, but have never seen a shred of proof. I'd love to see the evidence. As supporter of Canadian soccer, I've ended a 40+ year affinity for Vancouver based professional soccer teams as a result of the decisions around Canadians on MLS rosters. But I think they (Vancouver) are only equally guilty and have seen nothing that suggests otherwise.
Richard
It came directly from Bob Lenarduzzi as spokesman for the club, I can vouch for that for what it is worth, he made public statements to that effect.
Gordon
If Lenarduzzi claims Vancouver pushed it, then I would call that damn compelling evidence.
Richard
'Caps were having trouble recruiting Canadians of adequate calibre at prices they could afford. Seems TFC has been suffering from the same problem. The lure of even lower level European leagues for those who can get work permits is still stronger than MLS for many young men seeking to make their mark in the professional game. For many except the very best players the money is probably better too. This is what the Canadian clubs are dealing with, I can fully understand their dilemma. shawn_strat
My expectations are very low for the Impact next year. I realistically expect that Montreal will be one of the five lowest teams in MLS next year. Sadly, Vancouver and Toronto could join us.
