The very first match of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014:

CONCACAF Qualifying First Round First Leg

Montserrat vs. Belize

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 @ 6:00 PM EDT

Ato Boldon Stadium - Couva, Trinidad & Tobago

The Second Leg is on Sunday, June 19, so one of these teams will be eliminated before any other team in the world plays a match. (The next set of matches are in Asia on June 29.)

FIFA has a nice article about this:

Hope springs eternal indeed!

Yearly in hockey, the IIHF holds a series of world championships for teams below the elite countries, called tier 1, 2 & 3 (http://www.iihf.com/channels1011/wm-iii. Israel and South Africa were the class of the tier 3 tourney. Mongolia didn't show and Greece got pummelled (-72 in goal diffential in only 5 matches!).

Wouldn't it be cool if there ever was a so-called World cup for FIFA ranked basement dwellers? Think Vanatu vs. Djibouti or San Marino vs. Mauritius. It'd make for some great foder for the Fifa.com website.

There almost should be really. But I guess the minnows in soccer are typically much poorer countries than the minnows in hockey so there are better things to spend their money on. Maybe in a few decades...

Second leg match postponed. Belize federation suspended by FIFA

http://www.concacaf.com/page/WCQ/NewsDetail/0,,12813~2378342,00.html

ZURICH, Switzerland - The second leg of the World Cup qualifier between Belize and Montserrat scheduled for Sunday in Belmopan has been postponed due to FIFA's suspension of the Belizean soccer federation because of continued interference from the government, FIFA said Friday.

In a letter to Belize Football Federation President Bertie Chimilio, FIFA Deputy General Secretary Markus Kattner wrote that FIFA's Emergency Committee took the action after Belizean authorities informed the world body that it would not provide "security of the visiting team and officials at the match."

Kattner wrote that, under those circumstances, "FIFA cannot take the responsibility of letting the match take place."

The match must be rescheduled before July 10 providing the Belizean government ends its restrictions and FIFA has lifted the suspension. If not, Belize will be excluded from World Cup qualifying, Kattner wrote.

Belize won the first leg on Wednesday in Couva, Trinidad, 5-2.

The winner of the two-leg series will advance to the first group stage of CONCACAF qualifying, set for the fall of this year.

Qualifying for the AFC region started today. The Philippines tied Sri Lanka 1-1 in Columbo. Been reading up on the Filipino team recently (my wife's parents are from their) and in the past few years they've been searching the world for people with Filipino ancestry who are eligible to play for the nation team. There are even fan forums like this were they talk(dream) about getting JDG2 on team. Their goal today was scored by Nate Burkey who is a 26 year old american who previously had trials in Belgium and Bulgaria and now play for a club in the Philippines.

Most of today's matches in Asia sound like more like military operations than football matches:

Myanmar vs Mongolia

Laos vs Cambodia

Palestine vs Afghanistan

Pakistan vs Bangladesh

Taiwan vs Malaysia

Philippines vs Sri Lanka

Macau vs Vietnam
