Gold Cup 2011 Canada - USA Pre-Match thread

A Spanish beating on the US would be great if Canada can capitalize early. Score one in the first 10-15 minutes and they'll fold.

Well they play best in the first half so that scenario is at least theoretically consistent .. lol ...

4-0 to Spain. Call it an education. Shades of Argentina vs Canada, except that was in Argentina.

Ouch, can't imagine their supporters being happy about that... still winless in 2011, let's not be the first casualty

As one of those supporters, it's not what I wanted. But I don't know why the team scheduled this game so close to the Gold Cup. With that starting XI for the US, it was always going to be a beat down.

David Edgar has been added to the 23-man roster but will not travel to meet up with the team unless he is required at a later date.

Uhhhhh!??! WHY?? We have two center backs rights now with Hainault and McKenna and pretty sure Hainault plays on the outside in MLS.

Beware Concacaf, Canada is for real. The recent results show that we can compete with top 50 teams of the World. Once Hart has our boys playing the patient posessional style game with better team defence look out. I am going to go out on a lim and predict Canada to win the Gold Cup. Yes I know all of you will think I am crazy and your probably right but Canada's results even though they were friendlies against top 40 teams make me think that a new champion is on it's way.

Hey brah, don't bogart all that kind bc bud.

This is Canada's best chance to beat the US in a long time. On paper the US is a much better team BUT they are mired in their worst streak in recent history. They have a moron for a coach. Several deserving players were left off the roster in favor of guys who contribute very little. This is Mexico's cup to lose.

My neighbor just gave me a pretty good sized Canadian flag that I will be draping over the wall in front of section 115, as I am now in row 1. Very excited to see this game and I also feel pretty strongly that this may be our best chance to beat the USA in a while. Let the anticipation begin. Tuesday may be a long day teaching lol Hoping to meet some of you there !

Wow, I'd love to see those numbers, but honestly I don't event think 1K is possible...

I'm with Phil on this one, only because it's a midweek match and involves a fair bit of travel for most! I'm hoping the local Windsor soccer community boost our numbers! Really looking forward to this one, my first time supporting Canada in hostile territory that wasn't in Canada!

Tim Ream not playing too well, feet seem to be stuck in cement lol

I read that Onewyu was the bigger problem out there, very pylon-esque according to the postmatch reports I read. If he's starting on Tuesday, maybe we should start Jackson again up top?

Odds on Bet365 as of yesterday:

USA 1.40 Draw 5.00 Canada 7.00

Today:

USA 1.33 Draw 5.00 Canada 9.00

Looks like some money's been put on the States...checking out the prop bets and i'm liking the alternate asian handicaps for Canada; Canada +0.5 @ 3.20 and Canada +1.5 @ 1.75. If you think we can claw out a draw that's some good odds ($1 pays out $3.20) or think we'll lose by one goal ($1 pays out $1.75).

Canucks fever is even transcending sporting lines. Canadian national team soccer midfielder Josh Simpson of Victoria, preparing for the Gold Cup opener Tuesday against the U.S. at Ford Field in Detroit and 2014 World Cup qualifying this fall, has been avidly following the NHL team he grew up watching.

Simpson said he recently phoned his parents back in Victoria and they joked they are too busy following the Canucks right now to care much about soccer.

"Ouch, that hurts," chuckled Simpson.

Another piece of Gold Cup 2000 "porn" to get the crew excited: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/jasondevos/2011/06/gold-cup-memories-still-fresh.html

In fact, according to the tournament media guide, we shouldn't even have been there.

According to the guide, Canada would be lucky to score a goal in the Gold Cup, let alone win a game. Before our opening game, I read what had been written about my team, and then promptly threw the media guide in the bin in disgust.
