Paul Barber.... body paint and Whitecaps

Trillium

Ach poor Paul Barber CEO of the Whitecaps and recent immigrant from over home... thinking a bit of London New of World page 3 marketing would go over in Vancouver..... I wonder if Bobby L has been able to get him to realize the error of his ways.

Hopefully with influence from Bell... the Whitecaps might invite the Women's National Team for a pre World cup going away ... presentation ...to put a positive spin on women and soccer.

I can imagine just how the media is going to howl at the first match about body painting instead of focussing on the game....

Clearly Barber did not read him immigration booklet about Canadian Values... perhaps Jason Kenney can call on him as one of myriad of immigrant representatives of multi-cultural Vancouver to explain body painted girls dont work as marketing to soccer moms and daughters .... in Lotus land.

Bobaduzzi mentioned on the radio this morning that they consulted with the women's team before they proceeded. I'm sure they did their reaserch beforehand. Whatever, it's such a non-issue anyways.

Honestly what a non-issue most teams in the world have had a girl body painted in their kit (including TFC im pretty sure, although not organized by their FO) so whats the big deal now? The video didn't even show anything like who cares

What a load of self-righteous, sanctimonious crap! Kim Jackman, director of marketing for the Whitecaps, said the promotional video was intended to demonstrate the passion soccer fans have for their sport, including the tradition of body-painting and how it is done. She said it was edited specifically to be an “artistic expression” and that it was not released until female members of the Whitecaps staff had provided feedback on its appropriateness. Kim is a mother of two.

A whole bunch of people trying to make an issue out of nothing. The Whitecaps front office received more complaints about them putting scarves and kits on statues and monuments around the city than they did for this billboard. Plus, 2 members of the Whitecaps womens team have offered to be the model for the next such photo shoot. Look at the comments section of all the newspaper articles and most of the people are saying this is a non issue.

The Whitecaps have gotten exactly what they wanted...a lot of free publicity.

i agree with everyone else here it SHOULD be a non issue a the ad was really not even that provocative let alone offensive, however! Bell the, whitecaps' largest sponsor, said they didn't like it. . .so as effective as it was i don't think we'll be seeing much of the same anytime soon. It was a great idea though got them what they wanted, publicity about the team.

since the newspaper articles started coming out about this this morning there has been about 15000 hits on the video haha!

I think masster hit the nail on the head: this was a publicity grab at its finest. Whether than publicity is overall positive or negative - it's still publicity. It is a much talked about item coming at a time when the Canucks are running away with the show in the NHL. Sometimes you have to take a sledgehammer to a watermelon in the middle of a busy downtown square before people will notice you're there. I mean, everyone already knows about the Whitecaps moving to MLS, but now there is a major talking point involving the team.

Brilliantly done, Whitecaps marketing department. *slow clap*

+1!

This is excellent stuff by the Caps.

It isn't offensive... I find it funny that the only women that seem to pop off about this stuff are the hideous and obese ones that would never be considered to be painted and feature in such a campaign.

I really like that the Caps have abandoned the old school "Soccer Moms and Socce Tots" target Demo and gone right after the real target demo with Ca$h to burn, the 18-45 males who love soccer, are dying to get away from the wife and kids for a guys night and some pints. This is of course generally speaking. Of course there's gonna be families of 4 that sprung for seasons, but they're in the minority, the vast majority of ticket holders, corporations and companies aside, is likely the 18-45 year old male with a seat or two to bring a friend or his kid.

Also, the ad was very tastefully done, it wasn't provacative or pornographic in any way shape or form. it fit right in with the whole artistic vibe their marketing campaign has run with including the inside of the seasons tix booklet with sketches etc.

In sales "no news is NOT good news" if people are talking about you (doesn't matter if it's positive or negative) you're relevant.

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference... and for once the public is not indifferent (generally speaking) about the Whitecaps.

I have a 10 yr old daughter so my opinion will not in the majority here, but I thought the body-painting was off-base and not up to the classy standards the Whitecaps have managed to date.

Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition is 'very tastefully done' as you state, but it's not something I want in my house.

Then avert your eyes.

I'm so sick and tired of the uber-PC Crowd.

I also have two young daughters... like many have said in the media, we get junk mail and flyers and catalogues with lingerie pictures that are far more racy and provocative than the images the Caps have used.

What wasn't classy about the body painting? No "naughty bits" are exposed, the poses were not "racy", and it's got people talking...

It's no different than a good looking Kara Lang posing with Marty Nash for the kit launch, Kara is a good looking woman, as is the kit model, they're donning Caps garb whether it's paint or fabric...Good looking people draw eye balls, if it was tasteless or classless why would Caps women players offer to be used as models in the future?

give me strength...

Do the daughters of these people who are complaining ever watch music TV or walk past the magazine racks in their local supermarket or even browse the clothing advertising flyers that come in their local community newspapers? This is self-righteous, sanctimonious BS at its worst on their part. I have a daughter too and she thought the Whitecaps painted model gimmick was fantastic marketing.

My opinion only, but there is nothing 'classy' about body painting, and there is a big distinction between donning Caps garb 'whether it's paint or fabric'. That argument is in-line with the one posted a few above, stating only fat cows complain about such things.

Let's be clear, I don't have a huge objection to it. But to describe it as 'classy' is ridiculous. I don't think it is worth a huge debate but do you all really think Kerfoot was ecstatic with that promo?

He's the owner, it ran... either he was fine with it or he is a horrible owner with no control over his employees...

In order for it not to be 'classy' there has to be something 'not classy' about it... which is?....

For it not to have been classy you would have had to seen "Nipples" (oh my, my eyes!!!! I read nipple!) or for her to be posed provocatively, she's wearing underwear ffs.... if her clam had been painted and hanging out that would have been "not classy"

The idea was obviously run by the decision makers, and the sponsors, and it ran...and I haven't heard about anyone being fired... so?!.....

I have said enough. Johnny whateverthe**** and I have difft visions on what is or isn't classy and he is just getting a bit too excited about the righteousness of the whole ill-advised event.

Wow...after reading the comments before watching the video I am completely disappointed. That video was PG at best. You had to have seen a few pairs in your life to know you were looking at the side of a breast as it was painted. Kids would not have any idea what part of the body they were looking at.

Hott commercial....but they are still the $hitecaps! 3 days!
