TFC's new home jersey.

Are flag patches much weirder than playing national anthems before games? All seems pretty standard North American sporting culture.

They aren't much weirder, but they are both dumb practices. What does country have to do with club teams? It's just an excuse for politics being shoehorned into something it doesn't belong. There would never be all the negative publicity of CH fans booing the american anthem, just because they dont like boston.

Already at stade saputo, the anthem gets a cold reception, for reasons beyond politics.

It's something that's ok with the hyper patriots of America, but like in the rest of the world, it doesn't make sense here.

It's not really an Americanized thing in hockey. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens - both non-American teams - don't need a flag to declare their hyper-patriotism, nor do the Vancouver Canucks.

As for the Impact, they'll sell two versions of the jersey - one with and one without the flag patch - just like every other MLS side. And I'm sure they'll have a very prominent fleur de lys somewhere on their jesey (or crest) as usual. I'm sure there will still be debate, though.

Canadiens =/= Canadians. If the team would be founded now, the name would be Montreal Quebecois, that's the equivalent. So yeah, they were displaying "hyper-patriotism", but not to Canada.

IMFC is nothing but a Montreal team. That's why if it is required to have a flag, it should be Montreal's.

It's not that big of a deal. I wouldn't put much thought into it.
