Deebs
MLS has this up on the spanish section of their site. It's a bit of a gamble, but the little guy has moves that's for sure. http://www.mlssoccer.com/espanol/news/article/joao-plata-escogido-por-toronto-fc
TFCRegina
I think it's a dumb move. And I maintain that stance.
Loud Mouth Soup
Well, that's a convincing argument.
TFCRegina
Well, that's a convincing argument. Argued it at length on the RPB forums. I'm not getting into the stupidity of selecting a player based on a one week performance in a Combine alone any longer...
jpg75
So we traded a "player to be named later" for this pick. Guess it depends who that player will be before we can say whether this was a good move or not. This kid managed to score some goals during the combine, maybe he's a sleeper... We traded away Jon Conway for him. Conway is an awesome personality and a hell of a team guy, but he was just here to back Frei up until Kocic was able to do so full-time. I like this pick up. It may not work, but you're not going to get much better at 49th.
ag futbol
^ I agree, it's basically a no-lose proposition considering most 4th round picks won't make the team anyways. People need to get over their love of dime-a-dozen journeymen who occupy the back end of a roster.
bettermirror
Ya, either he gets cut or he shows some unique skill sets and develops in the reserve team. It's a can't-lose. Support the kid and see what happens!
tmcmurph
If Muggsy" Bogues can play NBA level basketball at 5'3" Plata can play soccer in the MLS at 5'0". This is supposed to be a skill game after all I know here in North America everyone thinks only big players can survive but sometimes the quickness of the smaller players is decisive. Hopefully he doesn't get injured and can show his stuff. At 49th pick what did you expect? I think it is worth taking a shot. Who else was available with those type of skills at that point?
