Copa CentroAmericana 2011

The Central American Championship will take place from January 14th-23rd in Panama. This tournament was formerly called the UNCAF Cup (for those wondering why I called it the Copa CentroAmericana). The tournament also serves as qualifying for the Gold Cup in which the top 5 teams will qualify. Top 2 in each group go to the SF's and 3rd place square off for the 5th and final GC spot.

Group A

Panama

El Salvador

Belize

Nicaragua

Group B

Costa Rica

Honduras

Guatemala

GolTV has acquired the NA rights!

http://www.livesoccertv.com/news/2277/goltv-acquires-exclusive-north-america-rights-to-copa-centroamericana/

MIAMI – December 8, 2010 – GolTV, the nation’s only independent bilingual channel delivering the most sought-after international fútbol, announced a new agreement with UNCAF, the Central American Football Union, to be the exclusive North American broadcaster of the 2011 Copa Centroamericana presented by +Movil. Formerly known as the UNCAF Nations Cup, this tournament is played every two years and in January 2011 will make its debut on GolTV live from Panama.

I know this is slightly off topic, but how reliable are the channels from that livesoccertv website? I've been trying to find a way to watch stuff on my pc for channels like Setanta, Gol, FSC, FSW, etc... Is it decent?

Back to the topic, I still think we could beat Panama on any given day. I don't know why we haven't scheduled a friendly against them in the last little while. It will be interesting to see who finishes top of Group B - honduras or Costa Rica.

Interestingly, if Panama doesn't do well at this tournament, they should drop fairly significantly as they did very well in the 2007 edition of this tournament (should be getting devalued) Other sides that would suffer a significant hit include: Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala.

They also won in 2009. So, yes they will drop, but I doubt it will change that much to the ranking. They have been hot this year.

Agreed that the aging of the results from 2007 and 2009 don't actually hurt Panama all that much. If they lose every one of their currently-scheduled games over the next few months, then yes, they could fall behind Canada. But I don't think that's likely, considering the tournament is actually in Panama.

Costa Rica looks interesting, since they've only had 2 wins in 10 games this year, and have a friendly against Argentina in the spring. But that string of poor results recently means that their ranking can't actually drop a whole lot further. Even if they lose all of their upcoming games, they'll still be ahead of Canada by May 2011 if we don't beat Greece.

  • 3 weeks later...
Just noticed that there is only 7 teams in UNCAF!? I didn't know that, doesn't make for much of tournament. Imagine how the 2 teams who don't qualify will feel.

Probably not too bad considering their program/federations are a joke. These teams (Belize and Nicaragua) barely play between official competitions (ie. UNCAF and WCQ) because they can't afford to either because they get no funds or have money stolen from the coffers.

A few years back the Nicaraguan NT had to travel to Costa Rica to play a friendly and the entire team and staff (probably around 2 dozen people) were packed into two 8-seater shuttle vans for the 7 hour trip from Managua to San Jose. They played the game, lost 9-0 and then drove home right after the game.

Tourny starts a week from today. Here are (some of) the preliminary squads:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Copa_Centroamericana_squads

The Hondurans and Panamanians would appear to be favourites based on who they're bringing to this competition. No Panamanian roster on wiki yet, but i read that Felipe Baloy will be released by Santos Laguna to play so expect them to have a nearly full squad. Honduras missing alot of players, but still some gamers on that team. Costa Rica going young, very young for this one. Guates and El Salvador re-building apparently.

Ok, here's the list of 26 Panamanians in camp:

http://www.fepafut.com/noticiasdetail.asp?id=2086

They defeated Panamanian clubs teams (Atl. Nacional) 2-0 and (Atl. Varaguense) 6-2 in friendly training matches last week. Baloy is apparently not being released.

We have a Roberto Brown sighting.

I'm concerned that GolTV might only be showing this down in the States. I flipped through the Guide on my TV last night and it's showing a bunch of other crap (la Liga game re-runs, Hallo Bundesliga etc.) instead of the games tonight.

You might also be able to catch it on ATDHE.NET...though they don't have any of the games listed yet.

El Salvador 2-0 Nicaragua

Costa Rica 1-1 Honduras

Panama 2-0 Belize

Anyone else miffed that GolTV cut off the Costa Rica-Honduras match before the Nunez goal in extra time!? Guess they were late for the next match and cut to the Belize national anthem being sung...amateur stuff.

Are you kidding. I assumed there was no time left with the Tico's up 1-0, when they switched to the Panama/Belize match.

Sunday's results:

Belize 2 – 5 El Salvador

Panama 2 – 0 Nicaragua

Guatemala 0 – 2 Costa Rica

None of the results in this tournament so far are a surprise, but it's mostly bad news as far as Canada's ranking within CONCACAF is concerned (this whole tournament is bad news for us).

El Salvador now sits just 20 points behind Canada in the race for 8th place in the May 2011 CONCACAF rankings, which will be used to determine seeding for World Cup qualifying. They also still have three more games in this tournament, all of which have the potential for huge point gains. A win by El Salvador in any one of their three remaining games in this tournament would almost certainly put them ahead of us. (Grenada still sits 30 points back of Canada, but so far have no matches scheduled over the next few months.)

Anyone out there with the requisite psycho-kinetic powers, please direct your energies accordingly. Go Panama! Go Honduras! Go Costa Rica!

Any losses by El Salvador will dilute their point total so all is not lost...besides, watching their game against Nicaragua they didn't look very athletic. When they meet up against Honduras or Costa Rica in the Semi's i'm pretty sure they'll lose.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough on this. My point was actually that a single win, accompanied by two losses, would be enough to put them ahead of us. But hopefully you're right. I'm more worried about their next game, against Panama, which is effectively meaningless, since both teams have already qualified for the semis.

And actually a draw between Honduras and Costa Rica is probably best. It denies both maximum FIFA points. :P

Are you remembering to average out the points from these games with their results from the past 12 months? They have losses to Panama, Costa Rica, USA, 2 losses to Guatemala and a draw with Honduras.

http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=slv/fixturesresults/gender=m/index.html

The points from Nicaragua and Belize wins should be 3(43)(1)(2.5) = 322.5 and 3(27)(1)(2.5) = 202.5 which is a combined 525. The draw with Honduras gives them 1(148)(1)(1) = 148 so that's 673 points for the year divided by 8 which is 84.1. Before the tournament they were on 148 divided by 6 which is 24.7, so they've gained 59.4 points. I'm not factoring in the loss of value from previous years results, but thanks to their strong WCQ results i think that's working against them. They were 160 points behind us when the tournament started so short of being UNCAF champions i think we're safe from being caught by them.
