Dominic DiGironimo steps down as CSL commissioner

Made some subsequent edits on that last point before your speedy reply as you can probably see. Beyond that it's maybe worth bearing in mind that TFC Academy are an amateur side (so NCAA eligibility can be retained) competing against semi-pro teams in the CSL right now but they are probably the most professional team in the league in their approach to the game. When a player salary budget of $30k is all that's involved drawing an amatuer vs pro distinction borders on farcical, in my opinion. The real benchmark should be who can get the job done on the field of play.

Agreed on all counts, the only reason I think a professionals-only edition of the Ontario Cup would be warranted (and later on, both cups) is the league's stated aspirations for promotion and relegation. If they were indeed successful in this regard, I think the top tier would come to be totally composed of purely professional clubs, with semi-pros becoming more common the further you go down the ladder.

Cutting to a different chase; thank you for posting that document, it has made me very excited about this prospective new league. Is there any other information on it that you have?

My biggest question at the moment, after the application deadline on the 25th, will club names be released as to who is in the league and/or applying for a place?

The most wonderful part is that these clubs won't be applying for "franchises" as they'll be separately incorporated already. Imagine that; Ontario and Quebec may be getting a soccer-pyramid structure that works the way they're supposed to.

I'm not the person to look to for inside info at the moment as I'm currently in Japan, for what it's worth. The info package thing is from the Canada Kicks website so that's probably a good place to look for future info on this. My guess would be that they would wait for sanctioning before going public on anything although there's a good chance that the Canada Kicks story could have been a deliberate leak of info to get the word out to try to attract a few more teams.

Japan, eh? Hope you're enjoying yourself.

Back on topic; wouldn't it be absolutely amazing if this new league were to be sanctioned that they could use the name NSL or National Soccer League? I imagine the CSL might have that copyrighted as they claim "heir" status from the NSL. If they don't I think it might be worth some consideration.

Either that or an entirely new league name. The CSL seem to be at something of a crossroads at the moment. London City is taking steps to modernize their approach (thirty years late, mind you) and if Milltown are involved in the new league, CSL would be losing one of their most successful new clubs. I'm interested to see what comes out of Windsor Stars this season, but if I'm being honest, I'm much more intrigued to learn the identities of the would-be clubs/owners in the proposed new league.

The NSL name is definitely available, for what it's worth:

http://www.cipo.ic.gc.ca/app/opic-cipo/trdmrks/srch/vwTrdmrk.do;jsessionid=0001sPU0QRY00Nyb_gMEDXJen8t:3L0HRIEOP7?lang=eng&status=OK&fileNumber=0562819&extension=0&startingDocumentIndexOnPage=1

The CIPO trademark database might be worth watching for activity on that. I'd be surprised if the 6 committed teams are not Milltown, Hamilton Croatia, TFC Academy, Impact Academy and the Ottawa and Pickering conditional expansion teams mainly because I suspect the first two would be reluctant to stick their necks out on this without the next two and the Quebec City saga suggests that the only Quebec teams with any hope of sanctioning for something like this would have to be linked to the Impact. Also suspect that the last two are youth soccer operations that are primarily interested in playing against the Academy teams and would not jump ship without them.

The interesting thing after that is whether the three written expressions of interests are existing CSL teams and/or conditional expansion franchises that are sitting on the fence right now. The KW United team seems to be tied into the Galaxy who joined at the same time as Milltown and Hamilton Croatia so maybe the lack of activity there similar to what is happening in Pickering and Ottawa might point to something? Then it's a case of who is the third one from the GTA. Croatia, Astros and Shooters are definitely "equity owners" and I think the Portuguese, Brampton and Serb entries have been around long enough to fall into that category as well (think three season was the benchmark on that) and those teams are not likely to walk away from something that until recently was perceived to be worth low six figures (i.e. full CSL franchise rights) so that leaves Erin Mills who would make it a neat old timers vs newcomers split and again they are a youth club operation that is likely to be most interested in playing against the Academy teams. Will be interesting to see what happens on this.

New league? (6) Milltown, Hamilton Croatia, TFC Academy, Impact Academy, Pickering, Ottawa

CSL? (9) NY Astros, YR Shooters, Toronto Croatia, Serbian White Eagles, Toronto SC/Portuguese, Brampton United, St Catherines Roma, London City, Windsor Stars

On the fence? (3) Brantford Galaxy, KW United, Erin Mills Eagles

^ You make a good case for the identity of some of these teams with Milltown and the Impact academy being the most likely. It's clear no one gets sanctioned in Quebec without Joey S's approval. It would be a major coup for the proposed league to carry both TFC and Impact academy squads. We'll have to see what happens in the next few months.

I think any team brought in under Di Gironimo is probably a decent bet for a new league participant. What is Di Gironimo up to these days, anyhow?

It would certainly spice things up to have a new D3 league in Ontario/Quebec, Whichever league came out on top, whether it was CSL or the new league, the winner would have to be an improvement over the status quo in the CSL.

Brantford can't "AFFORD" to be on the fence, they will remain with the CSL. KWU if the same owner as Brantford (someone posted this in an earlier thread) will be with the CSL. Can the same ownership own two teams in a pro-league?

Erin Mills are with the CSL as they have advertised tryouts on their website for the CSL team.

The lack of comment about Hamilton Croatia says something. :) Maybe the way to look at it is that the Galaxy can't afford to sit out a year and are waiting to see, which way the wind blows for sanctioning in 2011? Shouldn't be a problem with the same team being owned by the same person as long as there is separate local management. Plenty examples of that in North American soccer in the past including both MLS and NASL right now. With Erin Mills they could hardly publicly announce that they were preparing for another league when that other league has yet to reveal itself publicly so wouldn't read too much into that. If it's not Erin Mills then Toronto SC/Portuguese might be a prime candidate given the strong youth soccer angle after the rebranding and probable desire to play against Academy teams unlike some of the others who might be happy to see the back of them and return to a more conventional open age semi-pro format.

In response to Redcoatsforever, I have no idea what Dominic DiGironimo is up to but would suspect he would probably be a strong candidate to be commissioner of this new league if it gets the OK from OSA and Quebec federations. If he would get real about D2 level ambitions (i.e. forget about trying to hinder any ambitions to try to set up genuinely pro level teams in the larger cities in the NASL and to a lesser extent USL Pro and stick very much to pushing a regional D3 low budget semi-pro format) he probably has a lot to offer if the focus is on attracting existing clubs rather than "franchises" into a coherant pyramid league structure.

Thanks for the info. Fingers crossed the southwestern Ontario team that expressed a written interest is from London then. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next month or two on this.

concur. How likely do you think it would be that London might have a new club rather than AEK or FCL?

If this league includes Di Gironimo, I think that a clean slate in London might be a very attractive option. That said, Dominic wasn't super-opposed to ethnic clubs joining CSL, so AEK isn't unlikely for that reason, although based on the local fan flavour in London during Euro and world cups, London English FC could always be a strong candidate... there are a LOT of clubs in the city thanks to WOSL, I think any club in either WOSL 1 or premier would be able to put together decent candidacy pitch to join the new league.

^^I suspect Redcoatsforever replied to my message before reading your reply to it. Messageboards are sometimes not the most efficient way to convey information because you have no control over what will be read and in what sequence. Thanks again for the info you provided. Very illuminating.

I'm way out of the loop these days on London soccer so not sure I'm qualified to even speculate on something like this. Don't think London English would be a factor because unless things have changed in a big way over the last 5 years they aren't a traditional ethnic community team with a social club and youth teams associated with them. My impression is that the driving force behind them is one family and they've done very well to establish themselves as a first division team. The St George's Club that does exist is more into rugby than soccer. Probably best to just wait and see what happens on this.

The League does NOT include DiGironimo, stop associating him with the new proposed league he is not involved, end of discussion.

Calm down, relax, start breathing.

If there's no possibility of him being involved, why are we discussing this in the DiGironimo steps down thread?

And where do you get all of this info you're continually posting as though it were absolute?
