nolando
http://worldsoccerreader.com/2010/11/seattle-sounders-to-announce-fredy-montero-as-next-designated-player/ Kinda gives fuel to DDR's argument that he deserves DP money, don't ya think? I personally think this idea of rewarding MLS-bred (yes, I realise Montero is hardly an MLS product, but you get the point) stars with DP money is a good sign. If this is the new model, you keep guys in the league who have already proven that they can star in the league, guys who already have a strong connection with the fans. Better this that aging European-league castoffs imo.
tmcmurph
He is worth it. Like you say it is a great moment when a player proves himself in MLS and gets a DP salary (probably 1 mil a year or so). He will also be on contract for 5 years so if some Euro club really wants him they will fork over mucho deniro in transfer fees.
Standard
RSL makes Alvaro Saborio its first DP. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/home/50784824-76/saborio-designated-player-rsl.html.csp

jpoma
The first max salary is the league (about $400k) the rest is the team sorry, i should have been more clear. In the context of player transfers, who owns the contract. That is, let's say a DP were to be transferred from an MLS team to another league. Who decides he will be transferred? the League? the Team? Also, who gets the transfer money?
jpg75
Are DP contracts owned by the league, or individual teams? All contracts are owned by the league. The league pays for the salary that is under the cap (up to $335K) and the rest of the salary is paid for by the club.
masster
Teh good thing about making Montero a DP from a Seattle perspective, is that team's get a larger percentage of the transfer fees for a DP. So when Montero does go to Europe, more money will go directly to the Sounders as opposed to MLS.

TheKottonmouthed1555362307
"In the event that an MLS club transfers a Designated Player under contract to a club in another country, that MLS club will recoup the amount it has spent on that Designated Player before any additional transfer revenue is shared with the League." http://www.matchfitusa.com/2010/04/mls-makes-dp-rule-changes.html It's the 8th paragraph down once the quoted article starts. Is that proof for either way, not even sure.

Are they talking about transfer fee, salary or both?
masster
Thanks for diggin that up. I think there is more to it than just that though. I remember reading that a larger percentage of the transfer fee goes directly to the club as opposed to MLS for Designated Players.
TheKottonmouthed1555362307
Yeah, deifnitely got to have more to it, I wish I could find there actual rulebook somewhere, it should have the legit rule in it and not just some vague statement concerning it. As that article really doesn't clear anything up except that a team will in fact get more than they would otherwise, but deifnitely missing some details on exactly what the club would recieve.
