Richard
I don't think flagrantly promoting adblockers on a website you clearly support and that is looking to generate some income from advertisers to recover part of its costs is very sensible or thoughtful. Has it occurred to you what the advertisers might think as they read this thread?
yomurphy1
^ I have Ad-Block but I disable it for this site. I much rather deal with a few ads than know that socceronly's paying for this from his own pocket.
Joe MacCarthy
I don't think flagrantly promoting adblockers on a website you clearly support and that is looking to generate some income from advertisers to recover part of its costs is very sensible or thoughtful. Has it occurred to you what the advertisers might think as they read this thread?Has it occurred to you to stop being such a pompous boor and flip flopping your position? You whine about the ads and when someone suggests a solution you whine about that. Net advertisers are well aware of ad blocking software (of which you don't seem to be or you wouldn't have b*i*t*c*h*e*d about the ads) and adjust their efforts accordingly. And obviously it did occur to me about advertisers because I was the one who mentioned them after you complained about the ads in the first place. tmcmurph
Combining OpenDNS and AdBlock you can get rid of any adds that annoy you while still supporting the sites you want to support. This one and futsalcanada.ca are on my allow ads list and very few others. By the way I don't think anyone at google or any other ad revenue generating site could care less about our discussions here. We are one piece of algae in their ocean. Richard
I don't object to ads on a website, as long as they do not detract or annoy, after all I operate ad supported websites myself. Without ads many of the websites we all enjoy and appreciate wouldn't exist. The ad inserted at the top right adjacent to the first post in a thread here qualifies as annoying. I don't see this as being pompous, boorish or flip flopping frankly - that's just tmcmurph being an ass.

Fortunately the vast majority of web users know nothing about adblockers. What do you think would happen to those sites we all enjoy visiting regularly if we all used adblockers? I'll bet you download pirated music and movies for free too.

Joe MacCarthy
Even a media pioneer like David Sarnoff (NBC radio and television) who envisioned modern broadcasting (vs narrowcasting) never intended either as vehicles to sell soap. He saw them as vehicles to bring information and culture to a wider audience. Advertising is not inherently necessary for media nor is it for software. I'll bet ol' tricky Dick lines M$ pockets as well. Me, I'd rather support a free (as in freedom) culture of development as software began and was intended (see open source thread)

And considering the price gouging and frequent format changes (vinyl, cassette, CD) of commercial recordings and the fact artists benefit little from sales, I don't blame people for downloading music and software. Joe MacCarthy
Sarnoff's vision didn't last long did it? How many media outlets survive with no income?Doesn't mean it has to come from advertising. There are many economic models that allow for making money. If you can get that poker outta yer butt for a minute it might help you think better. Check out the open source thread, it might save you some cash unless you are hell bent on giving it to M$ and Steve Ballmer's retirement fund. tmcmurph
^I'll take credit for being the ass (not tmcmurph) if you will for being a flip flopping, pompous, boor. Too funny. The music I listen to is online not downloaded so the artists still get something(my iPod is an ancient 20GB HD unit with my CDs on it). When I buy music I try to do it direct from the artist to maximize their return. No I don't bootleg movies. You should try the chillout stream from di.fm sometime Richard. By the way your site is also unblocked for ads on my systems (litterally just my 2 cents worth of contribution to you). Advertising has turned into legalized bribery in a lot of instances like the pharmceutical industry. Check out projectcensored.org sometime. There are few ways around the advertising juggernaught, soon we will all be assimilated into the google hive/borg.
Vic
With the arrival of debating the sociopolitical mores of advertising, I now declare the website upgrade officially closed and in the past. paul-collins
Is there any way to scope the ads? The xtendmedia block in the first post has started autoplaying flash(ish) ads with sound.

Admin
We have to have an FCE writer for CSN It isn't for lack of trying. Women and FCE are two topics we can't find anyone for. If you have suggestions... People seem a little confused that this site makes money. Some writers want more to write a single article than the site makes in a whole month.
