The Whitecaps have brought in 22-year-old Chinese forward Long Tan for a trial, having acquired his USSF D-2 rights from FC Tampa Bay after trading midfielders Jonny Steele and Ricardo Sanchez to Tampa Bay this summer. The 6-1, 170-pound Tan had three goals and two assists for the Florida squad in 25 games this season.

The club has also brought in guest coaches Dale Mitchell and Carl Valentine to help out during the current off-season training camp. Mitchell, a former national team player and coach, will work with strikers while Valentine, a former Caps player and manager, will work with midfielders. Recently retired Whitecaps captain Martin Nash will also work with midfielders.

Midfielder/striker Cornelius Stewart has returned to the Caps after nearly two months of international duty with his native St. Vincent & the Grenadines side.

Philippe Davies, Ethan Gage, Kyle Porter, Randy Edwini-Bonsu and Julien Latendresse-Levesque have all been called up to Canada’s U-23 Olympic team for a training camp in Sunrise, Fla.

"Remember, Cornelius, the key to being a great international striker is to run really hard down the wing and then probably knock the ball out of the back. Don't worry about being able to cross it, that'll take care of itself. Also, it's best if you're playing on your off-wing, in a position you've never even seen before."

Mitchell, who succeeded Valentine as Whitecaps head coach before moving on to coach the Canadian U-20 and senior national teams, became coaching director of Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club after leaving the national program early last year.

He loves the job and enjoys working with young players but admits his passion for high-level soccer didn't disappear just because things didn't work out for him with the national men's side.

“I follow MLS pretty religiously and I know a lot of the players,” Mitchell said. “So I'm interested to see what happens here and really hope it will be positive for Vancouver. There's still part of you that wants to be a part of it.”

Valentine, who coached Ottawa Fury of the USL Premier Development League last year, said he has talked to the Whitecaps about various roles he might take with the club next season, including the possibility of doing some media work.

“That's the path I'm looking at right now and hopefully something evolves,” he said. “But I'm just happy to be involved. It's exciting times for the club and if I can be a part of that and help it be successful, that would be great.”

Reading the thread title, the first thing that popped into my mind was a zombie clawing its way out of a grave.

You are being a tad harsh there but Halloween just passed so I guess your analogy is timely. He scored buckets of goals for club and country but as a coach was way over his head in WCQ and it showed. If he can learn from his mistakes and get back on track he may still make a good coach for a club level team in NASL or MLS but I think looking at TT Dale would see how far he has to go to be an accomplished coach. If he still has the drive and ambition he showed as a player he might still make it as a pro coach. Only time will tell. I wish him well and many good memories of him as a player but I for one will be glad if he never attempts to head another national team for us.
