Trident
Gulls? How did that come about? I think thats a pretty sick nickname Controversial nickname. I'd say it's about a 30-70 split in the people who use it, and those who don't/don't know about it. During the first game ever against TFC, 2nd match in Saputo Stadium, a seagull "attacked" John Carver. Gulls showed that they even hate Toronto, plus they'll do whatever it takes to survive, just like IMFC will go to great lengths to get its results. Joe paco is one of the VERY vocal Anti-Gull camp. Grizzly
I am also very anti-gull. Trident has been waging a one man campaign for this crappy nickname and his 30% figure is of people who use/like it is pretty optimistic. The claim of the gull attacking Carver is ludicrous, the gull is over a metre away from him. Maybe Carver is afraid of birds or was just surprised like when someone taps you on the shoulder and you are not expecting it because the bird isn't even very close to him. Plus with BMO being near the water it has 10 times the seagulls that Stade Saputo has so why should it be our nickname? Also I don't see how one can claim we were blindsided by the suspensions, everyone knew they were coming and the fact they weren't immediately announced probably just means that the league/USSF took their time to examine the incident fully given that it was the end of the season. The suspensions are harsh but also hard to argue with because any league or federation has to protect the safety of its officiating regardless of how poorly they perform. Nick DeSantis is lucky not to have gotten suspended for the whole season given that he started the altercation and is a senior management official not a player (although I would argue the Impact and its fans were unlucky that he was not suspended for the season or permanently seeing as this might be the only way Papa Joe will ever fire him). If I were a player and was in a match this poorly reffed I might attack the guy too but nevertheless if you do something like that you know you will get penalized afterwards, indeed the league has no choice but to react harshly. I just hope that the ref's performance was also reviewed and that he received some punishment as well.

England isn't home to three lions, France doesn't always wear Blue, so it doesn't matter what place has more of it to determine a nickname or if it's 100% true. The only people who seem to think I'm waging a one man campaign is you. Not even joepaco would say that. I wasn't even the first Montreal blog to use that name. Anyways, aside from adressing the resident old curmudgeon who is resitant to any new ideas, it turns out that there was an error in the original report, and braz wasn't fined 1,500$, but 300$. RS
Since this "Gulls" nickname is all about Toronto (I'm shocked...), perhaps you should know that Toronto has a seagull-eating hawk on duty at BMO Field during all TFC games to keep those fuckers away. Just sayin'.

Some nimwit had us trying to call TFC the "Redcoats" for about two years, with incessant messaging, polling and suggestions that it had grotesquely more support than it would ever had. Didn't work there, either. Can't see Gulls ever catching on.

You're a smart one. Personally, I don't give a crap what you choose to call your team. All I know is that if it was my team, I wouldn't be pushing so hard to name it after a harmless bird that "sort of" flew kinda close to the opposing coach and startled him (causing him to laugh), on a day in which my supposedly biggest rival not only shut my side out, but also scored the first competitive goal in my team's new stadium. That's not exactly an incident I'd love to live on in perpetuity through a nickname if I were in your shoes, and it seems that your fellow Montreal fans agree. But hey, you're free to do what you like.
foreverthursday
The sexual tension in here is enormous! And by "sexual" I mean "French." Weird names are good. They stick out in people's minds. For instance, I named my cat Burt Reynolds. Trident likes the name "gulls" and feels it has a little history to it. Leave it alone. Trident
But hey, you're free to do what you like. Indeed. I am free to like it, like others are free to criticize or not use it. In the end we do what we want and the world keeps turning. I'm pretty bad at this "one man campaign" stuff people assume I do.
