Vic
From the Halfiax Chronicle Herald: A Kick at a World Cup Soccer Bid Inspires Stadium Dreams - Halifax is exploring a bid to become one of the six host cities if Canada is awarded the 2015 women’s World Cup soccer tournament. - They [the CSA] have extended the opportunity for interested cities across Canada to be a part of that bid process. We are exploring the opportunities and implications of what being a part of that bid would mean for Halifax and Nova Scotia. - Should Canada win the right next February to host the 2015 tournament and Halifax becomes a host city, it would obviously require construction of a long-awaited stadium, like the ones most major Canadian cities have had for decades. And given the international stature of the women’s World Cup, a large chunk of federal funding should be available to help build that stadium. - FIFA, the world soccer governing body, mandates that a stadium must have at least 20,000 fixed seats. - Insiders expect Moncton will also be a contender to host women’s World Cup games if the Canadian bid is successful. - There are plenty of hoops to jump through before anything tangible develops from this week’s news. Halifax has to confirm it will make a proposal to help host the tournament, Canada’s bid in February has to be the winner, Halifax then has to be chosen as one of the six host cities, and funding for a stadium has to be available. From FIFA: - the host of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015™ (24 teams) must also host the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup 2014 (16 teams).
terpfan68
Has the decision been made yet to expand the field to 24 teams? Wouldn't the upset of the US by Mexico point to the fact that the difference between the top teams and the middle ranked teams has narrowed? (USA #1 defeated by Mexico #22 in a very important match.) Macksam
Sure has. That quote is from the bid request document. Canada's bid request document? Also, I hope soccer people can take over these venues when the games are over and not potential CFL owners. I don't want them piggy backing off our sport for venues. Vic
That was from FIFA's invite to the world for all their tournaments: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/administration/01/31/40/64/circularno.1238-fifaworldcupsopenforbidding.pdf But it was just procedural. Countries planning to put in a bid have been working on them for a long time, including Canada. Hosting agreements and bid packages to be submitted by February 11, winners announced in March. It has massive implications for the future of women's soccer in Canada, which is at a watershed moment in time.
terpfan68
Have they deceided how the additional 8 teams will be allocated. I would like to see 1.5 more teams for concacaf, 2.5 more for Europe, 1 more for each of S. America and Africa and 2 more for Asia with Oceana staying the same. Anyone else have any ideas? From what the articles are suggesting, it seems Moncton and Halifax are competing for bids. I guess Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are the three cities guarenteed to host. Vic
Those are national dates to FIFA. No idea what the internal timelines would be for inclusion in Canada's prospectus.

No, I mean about Canadian women's soccer being in a "watershed moment".
Vic
Meaning for a country of our climate, size and culture we have historically performed many times our shoe size, but the women's game is advancing and professionalizing in every continent around the globe at a very fast pace. We have no options for professional women, so something like this with two World Cups in back-to-back years would go a long way to offset that and help keep us going forward. I think if we get a league nationally going for the men, we should try something professional for the women as well. I support the women's national team just as much in all honesty.
